Autumn Trekking in Nepal: September, October & November Guide to Weather, Best Treks & Safety
Suhana Shrestha
Quick Answer
Autumn in Nepal runs roughly mid-September to the end of November, immediately after the monsoon withdraws. It's one of the country's two peak trekking windows (the other is spring), prized for stable weather, the clearest mountain visibility of the year, and firm, dry trails. September is transitional and can still carry residual monsoon instability in its first half; October is the most popular month, combining near-ideal conditions with Nepal's biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar, and the busiest trails and teahouses of the year; November offers arguably the clearest air of the three months, with colder nights that intensify toward month's end. None of this removes altitude risk, acute mountain sickness (AMS) doesn't check the calendar, and a clear day in the valley says nothing about conditions on a high pass the same afternoon.
Why Autumn Is One of Nepal's Major Trekking Seasons
Nepal's climate is built around the South Asian monsoon. Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) frames the country's monsoon window as running from roughly mid-June to the end of September, though the exact withdrawal date shifts from year to year. Once the monsoon retreats, a different weather pattern typically takes over: more stable high pressure, drier air, and because the rains have washed dust and haze out of the atmosphere, the clearest mountain views most trekkers will see all year.
That combination is why autumn and spring are consistently described as Nepal's two main trekking seasons, both by the Nepal Tourism Board and by trekking operators across every major region. What autumn adds on top of spring is post-monsoon clarity: spring's views can be softened by pre-monsoon haze, while autumn's are typically crisper, especially by October and November.
None of this is a guarantee. Weather in the Himalaya varies by year, by region, and dramatically by altitude, a sunny morning in Namche Bazaar tells you very little about what's happening on the Thorong La or Cho La pass that same afternoon. Treat autumn's reputation as a strong average, not a promise.
Autumn Trekking in Nepal: September vs. October vs. November
| September | October | November | |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Weather Pattern | Transitional; monsoon withdrawal can extend into early-to-mid September in some years | Generally the most stable and clear month of autumn | Continues autumn's clear, stable pattern |
| Trail Conditions | Can still be muddy/wet, especially at lower elevations early in the month | Firm and dry on most routes | Dry and firm |
| Visibility | Improving through the month; often hazy early on | Typically the best of the year | Excellent, arguably the best of the three months on clear days |
| Temperature Tendency | Warm and humid at lower elevations, cooling with altitude | Comfortable at mid-altitude; cold at night above 4,000m | Noticeably colder, especially by late November; nights at altitude can drop well below freezing |
| Crowd Level | Lower than Oct/Nov | Highest of the year, teahouses and flights book out, especially around Dashain/Tihar | Thinner than October, especially after the first week |
| Best Suited For | Flexible travellers, rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu), those wanting to avoid peak crowds | First-time trekkers, classic routes (Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp) | Trekkers who want October's clarity with fewer crowds and are prepared for cold |
| Key Considerations | CBook with a buffer for possible late-monsoon disruption to flights/trailell | Book teahouses, flights and permits well in advance | Some high-altitude teahouses begin winter closures late in the month; pack for genuinely cold nights |
Figures above describe general seasonal tendencies, not guaranteed conditions for any specific date or year. Always check a short-range forecast before committing to a pass crossing.
Nepal Trekking Weather in Autumn
Three things shape what you'll actually experience on an autumn trek:
The monsoon-to-dry transition. Early September can still carry the tail end of the monsoon in a given year, occasional afternoon showers, residual cloud, and locally muddy trail sections, particularly at lower elevations. As the withdrawal completes (historically anywhere from late September into early-to-mid October, depending on the year), conditions shift toward the dry, stable pattern most people picture when they think of "Nepal in autumn."
Altitude, not just the calendar. Temperature in the Himalaya falls consistently with elevation roughly 6°C for every 1,000 metres gained is a commonly used rule of thumb, though actual figures vary with local conditions. That means a warm, T-shirt afternoon in the Kathmandu Valley (roughly 1,400m) can coexist with sub-zero night-time temperatures at a 4,000m+ teahouse the same day. Pack for the altitude you'll sleep at, not the altitude you started from.
Day-versus-night swing. Autumn's clear skies are a double-edged sword: the same lack of cloud cover that gives you sharp mountain views also means less insulation overnight, so temperature swings between a sunny midday and a pre-dawn start can be dramatic, especially above 3,500–4,000m.
Because mountain weather can shift faster than seasonal averages suggest, check a short-range forecast before any pass crossing or summit push, regardless of how settled the season has been so far, a clear week does not guarantee a clear day.
Best Autumn Treks in Nepal
Route selection should weigh your fitness, available days, and tolerance for crowds and cold as much as the destination itself. A few of Nepal's most established autumn routes, for topical orientation (see HGN's dedicated guides for full itinerary and cost detail):
- Everest Base Camp, typically 12–14 days, reaching roughly 5,364m at base camp (and often Kala Patthar at ~5,545m for the classic Everest view). Nepal's most iconic autumn trek and, correspondingly, its busiest in October. See HGN's Everest Base Camp Trek guide for a full itinerary and safety breakdown.
- Annapurna Circuit, typically 12–16 days depending on transport choices, crossing Thorong La Pass at roughly 5,416m, one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Full detail in HGN's Annapurna Circuit Trek guide.
- Annapurna Base Camp, shorter (around 7–10 days), reaching roughly 4,130m, a strong choice for trekkers with less time who still want a high-altitude autumn experience.
- Mardi Himal, a shorter, less-crowded Annapurna-region alternative, generally reaching around 4,500m at high camp, a reasonable pick for travellers who want autumn's clarity without October's Everest/Annapurna Circuit crowd levels.
- Manaslu Circuit, a quieter, restricted-area alternative crossing Larkya La Pass (~5,106m); autumn (particularly September–November) is also its official peak-season window for permit pricing.
- Upper Mustang, a rain-shadow region that's trekkable through the monsoon, but also very good in autumn; its restricted-area status means it needs a separate permit arranged through a registered agency well in advance.
- Tilicho Lake (as a side trip from the Annapurna Circuit) reaches one of the highest large lakes in the world at roughly 4,919m. See HGN's Tilicho Lake Trek guide.
Exact altitudes, durations and difficulty ratings vary by itinerary and operator, treat the figures above as general orientation and confirm specifics with your trekking agency before booking.
How to Choose the Right Autumn Trek
Work through these factors in order:
- Days available. Short window (under a week)? Look at Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, or the lower stages of Annapurna Base Camp rather than a 14-day circuit.
- Altitude tolerance and prior experience. First high-altitude trek? Favour routes with well-established acclimatization days (Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit both have standard rest-day stops built in) over faster, more aggressive itineraries.
- Crowd tolerance. If October's teahouse crowds and flight queues don't appeal, either shift toward late November or choose a quieter route like Manaslu or Upper Mustang.
- Cold tolerance. Late November at altitude is genuinely cold. If you're not equipped or experienced for sub-zero nights, October (or an earlier, lower-altitude route) is the safer call.
- Budget. Restricted-area permits (Manaslu, Upper Mustang) add meaningfully to trip cost on top of standard park/TIMS fees.
- Insurance and safety planning. Before you commit to a route, check what altitude your travel insurance actually covers, this should influence route choice, not just follow it. More on this below.
September Trekking in Nepal
September sits at the hinge between monsoon and autumn proper. Early in the month, especially in the first two to three weeks, residual monsoon instability is common: expect a chance of afternoon showers, occasional cloud obscuring high views, and muddier trail sections at lower elevations, particularly below 3,000m. By late September, conditions in most years are trending toward autumn's drier, clearer pattern, though the exact transition date varies from year to year and shouldn't be assumed in advance.
The trade-off is real: September trekkers accept some weather uncertainty in exchange for noticeably thinner crowds and easier teahouse/flight availability than October. Rain-shadow regions, Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu Valley are less affected by monsoon tail-end conditions and are a strong September-specific choice for that reason. If you're flexible on route, building a few buffer days into a September itinerary is a sensible hedge against short weather delays.
October Trekking in Nepal
October is, on average, Nepal's single most popular trekking month and for good reason. It typically combines the most stable, driest weather of the autumn window with the clearest mountain visibility, comfortable daytime trekking temperatures at most altitudes, and Nepal's two biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar, which usually fall within or near the month (exact dates shift each year on the lunar calendar).
The cost of that popularity is crowding. Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp see their highest trekker volumes of the year in October, teahouses fill up, domestic flights (notably Kathmandu–Lukla) can book out weeks in advance, and trail bottlenecks are common at popular viewpoints. If you're set on October, book accommodation, flights and permits with as much lead time as possible, and build flexibility into your schedule around the festival period specifically.
November Trekking in Nepal
November extends autumn's clear-weather advantage, and many experienced Himalayan trekkers rate it as the single best month for visibility and trail conditions, clearer, on average, than October, since post-monsoon atmospheric moisture continues to drop through the month. Crowds thin out meaningfully after the first week, once Dashain and Tihar conclude.
The trade-off is cold. Daytime temperatures at mid-altitude are still comfortable early in the month, but nights at higher elevations drop sharply, and by late November some high-altitude teahouses begin winter closures. Days are also noticeably shorter than in October, which compresses your trekking window and matters for pass-crossing timing. November rewards travellers who are properly equipped for genuinely cold nights and who plan pass crossings for earlier in the day.
High-Altitude Safety During Autumn
Clear skies and stable weather do not reduce altitude risk. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can affect trekkers regardless of fitness level, age, or prior experience, and it is caused by ascending faster than the body can adapt to reduced oxygen availability, not by anything specific to autumn conditions.
What to know:
- AMS typically presents as headache, nausea, fatigue, and disturbed sleep at altitude, usually above roughly 2,500–3,000m. It's common and, in its mild form, usually resolves with rest and no further ascent.
- HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) and HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) are rarer but serious progressions, fluid in the lungs or brain, respectively and are medical emergencies requiring immediate descent and, where necessary, emergency evacuation.
- The standard prevention principle used by mountain medicine organizations is a conservative ascent rate above roughly 3,000m, with built-in rest/acclimatization days rather than continuous altitude gain. Established routes like Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit build these in for exactly this reason.
- Warning symptoms that should stop further ascent include a worsening headache that doesn't respond to rest, loss of coordination, confusion, or breathlessness at rest. The standard guidance from mountain medicine sources is simple and non-negotiable: do not ascend further with symptoms, and descend if they worsen.
- Hydration matters, but isn't a substitute for pacing. Adequate fluid intake supports acclimatization, but drinking more water does not "outrun" a too-fast ascent rate, this is a common misconception worth correcting directly.
- Clear weather does not lower altitude risk. A dry, sunny autumn day can coexist with exactly the same physiological altitude stress as an overcast one. Don't let good visibility encourage faster ascent than your itinerary's acclimatization plan allows.
If you're relatively new to high-altitude trekking, choosing a route and operator with an explicit, conservative acclimatization schedule matters more than almost any other single preparation decision.
Autumn Trekking Insurance in Nepal
Before booking an autumn trek, check three things in any travel insurance policy you're considering:
- The altitude limit. Many standard travel insurance policies exclude high-altitude trekking entirely, or cap cover well below the altitude of routes like Everest Base Camp (~5,364m) or the Thorong La crossing on the Annapurna Circuit (~5,416m). Match the policy's altitude limit against the highest point of your specific itinerary, not the average altitude of the trek, a single high pass or viewpoint side trip can exceed a policy's ceiling even if most of the route sits lower.
- AMS/HAPE/HACE medical treatment. Confirm the policy explicitly covers treatment for altitude illness, not just general "medical emergencies", this is frequently excluded or capped separately in standard policies.
- Emergency and helicopter evacuation. Check whether evacuation cover requires you to pay upfront and claim reimbursement later, or whether the insurer/provider coordinates and pays for the evacuation directly. In a genuine high-altitude emergency, that distinction can matter as much as the coverage limit itself.
Beyond these three, it's also worth checking exclusions for pre-existing conditions, geographic restrictions (some policies exclude specific restricted areas like Upper Mustang or Manaslu), and whether trip interruption/cancellation is included if illness or weather forces you to turn back.
Permit and insurance requirements in Nepal have changed substantially in recent years, several current sources indicate that, as of 2026, proof of insurance covering high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation may be required before certain permits are issued, alongside an already-mandatory licensed-guide requirement introduced from 2023 onward for national park and conservation area routes. Because enforcement and documentation requirements vary by region and change from season to season, confirm current requirements directly with the Nepal Tourism Board or your trekking agency before departure rather than relying on any single blog, including this one, for the final word. For a full breakdown of general Nepal travel insurance requirements beyond the autumn-specific points above, see HGN's Nepal Trekking Travel Insurance Guide.
No insurance policy including HGN's covers "everything." Always review your specific plan's terms, exclusions, and altitude limits before you trek.
Emergency Evacuation & Rescue in Nepal
Helicopter evacuation is often discussed as if it's automatic once you're in trouble at altitude. In practice, it depends on several factors working together:
- Medical necessity: the situation has to meet the threshold for evacuation, usually assessed by a guide, medical provider, or insurer's coordination team.
- Location: some trail sections are far more accessible to a helicopter landing zone than others.
- Weather and visibility: high-altitude helicopter operations are weather-dependent; low cloud, high wind, or poor visibility can delay or prevent a flight even when the medical case is urgent.
- Aircraft availability: during peak autumn season, when trekker volumes are highest, aircraft and crew availability can be a genuine constraint.
- Authorization and insurance coordination: confirming coverage and dispatch authority takes time, which is why pre-arranged, direct-coordination evacuation cover (rather than reimbursement-only policies) can meaningfully reduce delay.
None of this means evacuation isn't available in Nepal, Kathmandu-based helicopter rescue is a well-established, frequently used service in the Himalaya. It means evacuation should never be treated as guaranteed or instantaneous, and your pre-trek planning (route choice, communication equipment, insurance coordination process) should reflect that reality rather than assume it away.
HGN Comprehensive Tourism Guard
Once you understand the altitude-safety and insurance-coordination picture above, it's worth knowing how Himalayan Guardian Nepal's Comprehensive Tourism Guard (CTG) fits into autumn trek preparation as one option among several, not a substitute for doing the homework above.
CTG is built around altitude-matched plans covering up to 2,000m, 3,500m, 5,500m, and 6,000m (plus applicable special routes and peaks), so trekkers can select coverage matched to their specific route's highest point rather than a generic travel-insurance tier. Plans run in set durations from 7 to 60 days, and standard public eligibility is ages 18–70. Emergency Medical Transportation can include first-site rescue and emergency medical evacuation for qualifying accidental injury or altitude-related illness, with helicopter evacuation used when medically necessary and operationally feasible, the same real-world constraints described in the section above apply here too; it is not guaranteed in every circumstance. AMS/HAPE/HACE protection applies according to the terms of the selected plan.
CTG also includes an optional satellite GPS device (the Tracer M3), which is not mandatory, it adds location tracking and a one-touch SOS function for remote sections without mobile signal, but it does not monitor vital signs such as heart rate or blood oxygen. As with any policy, final eligibility, exclusions, and claims decisions are subject to the applicable policy terms and insurer approval. Full plan details are available on HGN's coverage plans page.
Autumn Trekking Packing Checklist
Layering (the core autumn principle: warm midday sun, cold nights)
- Moisture-wicking base layers (top and bottom)
- Insulating mid-layer (fleece or lightweight down)
- Windproof/waterproof outer shell jacket and trousers
- Down jacket for evenings above 3,500m, especially in November
Sleep and cold-weather gear
- Sleeping bag rated appropriately for your route's highest overnight altitude and month, many teahouses above 4,000m are unheated, and November nights are meaningfully colder than September ones
- Warm hat, gloves (consider liner + insulated shell combination), buff/neck gaiter
Feet
- Broken-in trekking boots with ankle support
- Moisture-wicking liner socks + insulating trekking socks
- Gaiters if trekking early in autumn when trail mud is still possible
Health and altitude
- Basic first-aid kit and any personal medication
- Water purification (tablets or filter)
- Sun protection, UV exposure increases with altitude even on cool days
Documentation
- Passport, permits, insurance details (physical and digital copies), emergency contacts
This list covers general autumn conditions; adjust for your specific route's maximum altitude and month, and confirm specifics with your trekking agency.
Permits and Trekking Rules
Nepal's trekking permit and guide rules have changed substantially since 2023, and requirements continue to evolve by region, treat any packing list or old blog post that predates 2025 with caution. As a general (not exhaustive) picture confirmed across multiple current sources:
- A licensed guide from a registered trekking agency is required for foreign trekkers on national park and conservation area routes, including Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu, independent/unguided trekking on these routes is no longer permitted.
- Restricted areas (Upper Mustang, Manaslu, Nar Phu, Dolpo, and others) require a separate Restricted Area Permit arranged through a registered agency, in addition to standard park/conservation fees.
- TIMS card requirements vary by region and have changed recently, some sources indicate TIMS is no longer enforced in the Everest (Khumbu) and Annapurna regions as of 2026, having been replaced or superseded by local municipality/conservation-area permits, while it reportedly remains required in Langtang, the Manaslu Circuit, and far-western Nepal. This point is genuinely in flux and reported inconsistently across current sources, confirm directly with the Nepal Tourism Board or your trekking agency before travel rather than relying on any blog's snapshot of the rules, including this one.
- Manaslu's restricted-area permit fee is typically higher during autumn (broadly September–November) than the rest of the year, reflecting peak-season demand.
Because this is one of the fastest-changing areas of Nepal trekking regulation, build a permit-verification step into your pre-trip checklist regardless of what any single source (including this article) says about current rules.
Responsible Autumn Trekking
Autumn's popularity especially in October puts real pressure on trails, teahouses, and mountain communities. A few Leave No Trace-aligned habits that matter most on busy autumn routes:
- Pack out all rubbish, including biodegradable waste at high altitude, where decomposition is extremely slow.
- Use refillable bottles with purification rather than buying single-use plastic water bottles at teahouses.
- Stay on marked trails, especially in high-traffic October conditions, to reduce erosion around bottlenecked viewpoints.
- Respect local customs and communities, autumn's festival season (Dashain, Tihar) means you may be trekking through villages during significant cultural celebrations; ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
- Support local teahouses and guides directly rather than defaulting to imported supplies where local options exist.
Autumn Trekking FAQ
Is autumn a good time to trek in Nepal? Yes, generally autumn (mid-September to late November) is one of Nepal's two main trekking seasons, known for stable weather and the clearest mountain visibility of the year. October is typically the most reliable month; September can still carry residual monsoon instability early on.
Is September a good time to visit Nepal? It can be, especially from mid-to-late September onward, but early September is transitional and can still see monsoon-tail showers and reduced visibility in some years. Rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang, Dolpo) are a more reliable September choice than monsoon-exposed routes.
Is October the best month for trekking in Nepal? It's the most popular, combining excellent average weather with major festivals but "best" depends on your crowd tolerance. November often offers comparably clear or clearer skies with far fewer people.
Is Everest Base Camp crowded in October? Yes, October is Everest Base Camp's busiest month of the year, with teahouses and Lukla flights booking out well in advance.
Is trekking in Nepal safe? Generally yes, when undertaken with a licensed guide, adequate acclimatization planning, and appropriate altitude-rated insurance, the primary risks (altitude illness, trail conditions, and weather-dependent evacuation logistics) are manageable with proper preparation rather than being reasons to avoid trekking.
Is Kathmandu at high altitude? Kathmandu sits at roughly 1,400m, high enough to notice on arrival for some travellers, but well below the altitudes (generally 2,500m+) where AMS becomes a meaningful risk.
Does travel insurance cover altitude sickness? Not automatically. Many standard travel insurance policies exclude high-altitude trekking and AMS/HAPE/HACE treatment, or cap coverage below common trekking altitudes. Always check your specific policy's altitude limit and AMS provisions rather than assuming general "medical coverage" includes it.
What happens if I need emergency evacuation in Nepal? Evacuation, including by helicopter, depends on medical necessity, location, weather, visibility, and aircraft availability, coordinated through your insurer or on-ground safety provider. It is never guaranteed regardless of how comprehensive your policy is, treat it as a coordinated, weather-dependent process rather than an automatic outcome.
Do I need a guide to trek in Nepal in autumn? For the major national park and conservation area routes (Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu), yes a licensed guide from a registered agency is currently required for foreign trekkers, a rule that has applied broadly since 2023.
Final Autumn Trek Planning Checklist
[ ] Choose a route matched to your days, fitness, and cold tolerance
[ ] Decide which autumn month fits your crowd/weather trade-off
[ ] Book teahouses and domestic flights early, especially for October
[ ] Confirm current guide and permit requirements for your specific route
[ ] Choose insurance with an altitude limit that covers your itinerary's highest point, plus AMS/HAPE/HACE and evacuation cover
[ ] Pack for both warm midday sun and cold, high-altitude nights
[ ] Build in acclimatization/rest days rather than a continuous-ascent itinerary
[ ] Share your itinerary and emergency contacts with someone outside the trek
[ ] Check a short-range weather forecast before any high-pass crossing
Conclusion
Autumn earns its reputation as one of Nepal's best trekking windows, but "best" isn't uniform across the season. September rewards flexibility and a tolerance for some early-month uncertainty; October delivers the most reliable conditions at the cost of real crowding; November offers a strong claim to the clearest skies of the year, paid for in cold. The right choice depends less on picking "the best month" in the abstract and more on matching a specific month and route to your fitness, timeline, and risk tolerance and then backing that choice with acclimatization planning and insurance that actually covers the altitude you'll reach. Get those decisions right, and autumn in the Himalaya delivers exactly what its reputation promises.
