Trekking During Dashain in Nepal: What Travellers Need to Know in 2026
Suhana Shrestha
October is one of Nepal's major trekking periods, but in 2026 it also overlaps with Dashain, when family travel, public holidays and changes in normal working routines can affect the logistics surrounding a trek. Trekking during Dashain in Nepal is possible, and the trails do not close. What shifts is everything around them: how you reach the trailhead, who is free to help you, which offices are open, and how much slack your itinerary has if a bus or flight slips.
This guide is for travellers whose trek overlaps the festival, which runs from 11 to 25 October 2026. It covers what changes, what to arrange before the holiday block begins on 17 October, and the one thing that does not change at all: altitude.
Quick Answer: Can You Trek During Dashain in Nepal?
Yes. Trekking in Nepal continues during Dashain, and October is a peak trekking month. But the festival affects the services around a trek: long-distance road transport is in high demand, government offices follow the holiday calendar, guides, porters and lodge families may be celebrating at home, and some local shops close. Confirm transport, staffing, permits and accommodation before the holiday block begins on 17 October 2026.
When Is Dashain in Nepal in 2026?
Dashain 2026 starts with Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October, and the main tika day, Vijaya Dashami, falls on Wednesday 21 October. The festival closes with Kojagrat Purnima on 25 October.
| Festival day | Date (2026) | What it means for travellers |
|---|---|---|
| Ghatasthapana | Sun 11 Oct | Dashain begins and jamara is sown. It is a separate public holiday, and road departures from Kathmandu begin to build. |
| Phulpati | Sat 17 Oct | First day of the gazetted holiday block (17–23 Oct). Forecast to be the busiest departure day from Kathmandu. |
| Maha Ashtami | Sun 18 Oct* | Major ritual day inside the holiday block. Expect reduced services in towns. |
| Maha Navami | Tue 20 Oct | Last day of Navaratri, inside the holiday block. |
| Vijaya Dashami (Tika) | Wed 21 Oct* | Main tika day. Families gather. Treat it as a no-travel day. |
| Ekadashi–Dwadashi | Thu 22 – Fri 23 Oct | Tika visits continue. The holiday block ends on 23 Oct, and return travel is likely to build. |
| Kojagrat Purnima | Sun 25 Oct | Full-moon day marking the traditional end of Dashain. |
See the date note below.
The dates that matter most for logistics are 17–23 October. The government's 2083 BS holiday list sets the Dashain holiday from Ashoj 31 to Kartik 6, which is 17 to 23 October. Ghatasthapana is granted separately. Public offices in Nepal normally close only on Saturdays, so offices that follow the government calendar are likely to be closed from Saturday 17 October to Saturday 24 October. Private businesses are not obliged to follow government holidays. Tihar brings another government holiday block in early November (Kartik 22–26, or 8–12 November), which matters if your trek ends then.
A note on date discrepancies. Sources differ by a day in two places:
- Maha Ashtami: The Nepali patro places it on 18 October, but the Ashtami tithi runs into the morning of 19 October. 19 October is a holiday with no separate Dashain observance, and some listings mark Ashtami on that day.
- Tika: At least one Nepali outlet reported the tika date as 20 October, while the patro and holiday listings give 21 October. Calendars are calculated for Kathmandu.
We use 21 October, but plan around 20–21 October as one no-travel window. The official tika time (sait) is announced by the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti shortly before the festival, so check it closer to the date.
What Actually Changes for Trekkers During Dashain?
Dashain does not close Nepal's mountains. It changes the systems that get you to them. These ten areas are where a trek and the festival meet.
| Area | What may change | What travellers should do |
|---|---|---|
| Road transport | Heavy domestic demand around Ghatasthapana and especially Phulpati. Tickets for particular days and routes can be hard to get. | Book early. Avoid public-bus departures from Kathmandu around 16–18 Oct. Consider private or tourist transport. |
| Domestic flights | Seat competition plus the usual weather delays. Mountain flights run on early-morning windows. | Book flexibly. Add buffer days at both ends. Confirm your departure airport. |
| Guides and porters | Staff may want to be with their families. Substitutions are possible. | Confirm named staff and Dashain-day arrangements in writing, early. |
| Permits and offices | Government offices follow the holiday calendar (17 - 23 Oct block). | Finish permits and registrations before 17 Oct. Carry copies. |
| Shops and money | Banks and many shops reduce hours or close, especially on main days. | Buy gear, medicines and Nepali rupees before the block. |
| Hotels (Kathmandu/Pokhara) | Autumn peak demand overlaps festival travel. | Reserve your first and last nights. |
| Teahouses | Availability varies by route, village, family and date. | Ask your guide to call ahead. Reserve popular high stops where practical. |
| Route conditions | Late-monsoon floods and landslides disrupted some roads and access in 2026. | Check route and road status within 48 hours of departure. |
| Altitude pacing | Holiday-window pressure can tempt people to shorten or rush an itinerary. | Keep acclimatisation days. Do not trade them for time. |
| Emergency planning | Limited mobile signal remains. Staff and office availability may be reduced. | Know who to call, carry a communication plan, and check your protection matches your maximum altitude. |
Normal October trek vs Dashain-period trek:
| Preparation item | Normal October trek | Dashain-period trek |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Book when convenient | Book before the 17 Oct pinch point |
| Guide/porter | Guide/porter | Confirm names and festival-day arrangements |
| Permits | Arrange before departure | Finish before the holiday block begins |
| Money | Withdraw in town as needed | Carry enough rupees before 17 Oct |
| Itinerary | Some buffer | Extra buffer at both ends |
| Communication | Plan for low signal | Same, plus confirm which lines are staffed |
Does Dashain Affect Transportation in Nepal?
Yes. Dashain is Nepal's largest domestic travel period, and demand for long-distance buses, microbuses and flights rises sharply as people head home. Nepal Tourism Board notes that Kathmandu's population drops noticeably as many people return to their home districts. For trekkers, the practical effect is harder-to-get tickets, crowded departure points and less slack when a road or flight is disrupted.
Buses and road travel
A parliamentary infrastructure committee report covered on 30 September 2026 estimates 600,000 to 1 million people will leave the Kathmandu Valley. Movement is expected to build around Ghatasthapana, with the biggest rush on Phulpati: as many as 113,000 passengers in a day. The Pokhara corridor is expected to carry the largest share of vehicles leaving through Nagdhunga, which matters for Annapurna-region trekkers. Morning peak departures run roughly 6-9am and evening peaks 6-9pm.
The committee expects enough seats overall, but passengers often struggle to get tickets because demand is uneven by day, route and destination. As of 30 September, the Department of Transport Management had not fixed a date for opening advance booking. Check whether it has opened by the time you read this.
Roads are also a 2026 variable. Sections of the Prithvi Highway were blocked by landslides on 24–25 September. Conditions change daily, so confirm the road before you leave.
Domestic flights
HGN did not find an official statement on Dashain-specific flight capacity, so we will not claim one. HGN's seasonal guide notes that flights can book out around the Dashain and Tihar period. Flights to Lukla depend on weather and early-morning windows, and most Lukla flights have operated from Ramechhap (Manthali) airport since October 2022. Confirm the current departure airport with your operator.
Buffer days
Add at least one spare day before and after the trek, and avoid scheduling an international flight the day after you return. A delayed bus or flight is annoying; a missed international departure is expensive.
A festival-day vs logistics timeline:
| Window | What is happening | Planning move |
|---|---|---|
| Before 11 Oct | Normal operations, advance bookings opening | Lock transport, permits, staff and cash |
| 11–16 Oct | Ghatasthapana, departures building | Finalise. Avoid last-minute purchases. |
| 17–19 Oct | Phulpati, Ashtami, peak exits, holiday begins | Be at your trailhead region or already trekking. Avoid Kathmandu public-bus exits. |
| 20–21 Oct | Navami and Tika | Plan a rest or no-travel window. |
| 22–24 Oct | End of holiday block, offices closed through Saturday | Expect return traffic. |
| 25 Oct onward | Kojagrat Purnima, services normalise | Confirm reopening before relying on offices. |
Are Trekking Guides and Porters Available During Dashain?
Dashain matters to the people who make your trek work. A guide whose village is two days from the trailhead may need to leave before Phulpati to be home for tika on 21 October. A porter's family may expect them back.
Practical steps:
- Ask your agency to name your guide and porters in writing as early as possible.
- Discuss Dashain days before you leave: which days are trek days, which are rest days, and what happens on 21 October.
- If staff are swapped at the last minute, ask for the replacement's licence details.
- Since 1 April 2023, Nepal Tourism Board has required foreign trekkers to be accompanied by a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. Rules and their application have been adjusted since, so confirm the current position with your agency.
Ask how your agency insures and equips its guides and porters. This is a normal and respectful question.
Are Teahouses and Trekking Services Open During Dashain?
Many are, but availability varies. Autumn is peak season, and lodges along established routes generally operate, but availability depends on the route, the village, the family running the lodge and the date. Expect simpler menus or family closures on main festival days, and confirm the next night's bed rather than assuming it.
Dashain is a Hindu festival. The 2011 census recorded about 82% of Nepalis as Hindu and about 9% as Buddhist, and observance differs across the communities along trekking routes. In some villages Dashain dominates daily life, and in others other calendars matter more.
Beds are also under pressure. HGN's seasonal guide notes that teahouse space can book out around the Dashain and Tihar period. At high stops such as Gorakshep, competition for beds in autumn can be intense. Ask your guide to call ahead for key nights, carry snacks, and keep a flexible next-stage option.
Should You Arrange Trekking Permits Before Dashain?
Yes, where possible. Restricted-area treks need a special permit from the Department of Immigration, and processing depends on government offices that follow the public-holiday calendar. HGN found no official notice setting permit-counter hours over Dashain, so the sensible approach is to finish permits and registrations before the holiday block begins on 17 October.
Nepal Tourism Board states that restricted-area treks require a special permit issued by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu. Trekkers must keep the permit with them, show it on request, and follow only the specified route. Other entry permits (national park, conservation area and any TIMS-type registration) have their own issuing offices, so ask your agency which apply to your route.
Because the government holiday runs 17–23 October, offices that follow it may offer reduced or no service. We have not claimed a specific closure for any office. We simply recommend not depending on one.
What Is the Weather Like During Dashain?
Dashain falls just after the monsoon's normal exit. Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasters said on 2 October that the monsoon could withdraw from Nepal by Dashain, though light rain or drizzle is still possible.
2026 has not been a quiet year, so route-by-route checks matter more than usual. Heavy rain on 24–28 September triggered floods and landslides in several districts. Operators also reported that the August flood in Rasuwa disrupted northern road access, with the Langtang and Gosaikunda trekking areas themselves reported safe while access needed planning.
For a Dashain trek, check road and route status within 48 hours of departure rather than relying on a report from last month, and ask your agency about trailhead access and alternatives. For October temperatures, visibility and route choice, see our guide to autumn trekking conditions in Nepal, and our route-by-route safety update.
Clear October Skies Don't Remove Altitude Risk
Dashain changes the calendar. Altitude doesn't.
The Wilderness Medical Society's 2024 guidelines place unacclimatised travellers at risk of altitude illness above about 2,500 m. Above 3,000 m, sleeping altitude should not rise by more than about 500 m a day, with a rest day every three to four days. Nepal Tourism Board gives similar guidance: if you feel unwell above 2,500 m, treat it as possible AMS, do not go higher, and descend if symptoms worsen.
The three conditions are related but not the same:
- AMS (acute mountain sickness) is the common one: headache plus nausea, fatigue, dizziness or poor sleep.
- HACE (cerebral oedema) is the severe neurological end of the spectrum. It is commonly preceded by AMS.
- HAPE (pulmonary oedema) is the respiratory form. It can occur without AMS and tends to appear at least two days after ascent to above 3,000–4,000 m.
HACE and HAPE are emergencies, and descent is the primary response. This is general guidance, not a diagnosis.
The Dashain angle: calendar pressure is a real risk factor. A delayed bus or flight, a team that wants to be home for tika, or a fixed return date can tempt people to skip a rest day or shorten the itinerary. Do not. The Himalayan Rescue Association also runs daily altitude talks at its aid posts in Pheriche and Manang during the spring and autumn seasons. For symptom detail, see the warning signs of altitude sickness.
What If You Need Help While Trekking During Dashain?
A typical emergency process follows these steps. Timing and the type of response vary with the situation.
1. Emergency / SOS → serious problem recognised; immediate safety steps
↓
2. Communication → satellite device, mobile, lodge phone or guide
↓
3. Location + situation → where you are, what has happened
↓
4. Assessment → medical urgency, weather, terrain
↓
5. Coordination → provider, rescue operator, insurer, hospital
↓
6. Ground or air response as appropriate
↓
7. Medical facility
Three points keep this honest:
- Air evacuation is never guaranteed. Whether a helicopter flies depends on medical necessity, weather, terrain, visibility, aircraft availability, landing conditions, operational feasibility, authorisation and policy terms. Ground transport or another response may be more appropriate. One operator's regional update described rescue helicopters near Samagaun being grounded by weather for about four days in late September 2026.
- Signal is limited. Many routes have limited or no mobile coverage beyond larger villages, so a phone alone is not a plan.
- Know who to call. Nepal's Tourist Police hotline is 1144, and Nepal Police is 100. Confirm in advance that your provider's emergency line and your guide's contact plan are in place before the holiday block begins.
For how coordination works in practice, see how emergency response and rescue coordination work and what actually happens during a helicopter evacuation.
Does Dashain Change Your Trekking Insurance?
A festival does not automatically change an insurance policy. What matters is the policy wording: the insured activity, altitude limit, medical benefits, emergency transportation terms and exclusions. Check these against your actual itinerary and maximum altitude, not the date.
Items to check:
- Altitude ceiling. HGN's Manaslu insurance guide notes some policies stop covering trekking at 5,000 m.
- Whether the policy covers AMS-related treatment and emergency transportation, and the conditions on helicopter evacuation.
- Exclusions and pre-existing-condition rules.
- Claim notification windows.
Trekking Through Dashain Respectfully
Nepal Tourism Board describes Dashain as a time of family reunions, tika blessings, gifts, feasts, new clothes, home visits, kite flying and village swings. Tika is a mark of red vermilion mixed with yoghurt and rice, given by elders with blessings. Ghatasthapana is when jamara, the barley shoots later used in blessings, is sown. The festival is above all a family occasion.
HGN's guidance for visitors:
- Accept tika graciously if offered. It is a blessing, and you are welcome to receive it.
- Ask before photographing people or rituals, especially inside homes and temples.
- Dress modestly at temples and in family spaces.
- Do not expect a normal day from lodges and hosts on 21 October. Menus may be simpler.
- If invited to a home, treat it as an honour. A modest gift such as fruit or sweets is generally appreciated.
- Rituals vary. Animal sacrifices are traditionally performed at temples and homes around Maha Ashtami. If you would rather not witness this, say so to your host or guide.
- Give your team room to celebrate. See the guides and porters section above.

How HGN / CTG Fits Into Trek Preparation
Preparation for remote, high-altitude travel goes beyond transport and accommodation. It means knowing your itinerary and its maximum altitude, having a way to communicate where mobile signal ends, understanding how emergency transportation is decided, and checking that your protection actually fits the route.
Comprehensive Tourism Guard (CTG) is Himalayan Guardian Nepal's trekking protection for Nepal. It combines insurance with emergency coordination, rescue support and claims assistance . Plans are structured by the highest altitude on your route, and emergency medical transportation can include helicopter evacuation only where medically necessary and operationally appropriate. It is not guaranteed. It can be purchased after arriving in Nepal if the trek has not yet started, with coverage beginning on the date you choose.
Plan details, limits and exclusions are in the policy wording. Compare plans and pricing to see which altitude tier fits your itinerary.
The Bottom Line: Trekking During Dashain in Nepal Is About Planning
Trekking during Dashain in Nepal is not mainly a question of whether the trails are open. They are. It is a question of whether the journey around your trek, including transport, permits, people, services and emergency preparation, has been planned for Nepal's biggest festival. Finish what you can before 17 October, protect your acclimatisation days, check routes day by day, and leave room for the unexpected.
Frequently Asked Questions About Trekking During Dashain
Can you trek during Dashain in Nepal?
Yes. Trekking continues during Dashain, and the festival falls in October, one of Nepal's busiest trekking months. The trails do not close, but transport demand, staff availability, office hours, shop opening and accommodation can all change. Confirm arrangements before 17 October 2026 and keep spare days in your itinerary.
When is Dashain in Nepal in 2026?
Dashain 2026 runs from Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October to Kojagrat Purnima on Sunday 25 October. Phulpati is 17 October, Maha Navami 20 October and Vijaya Dashami, the main tika day, 21 October. The government holiday runs 17–23 October. A few calendars differ by a day on Ashtami and Tika, so confirm locally.
Does Nepal close during Dashain?
No. Nepal stays open to visitors, and many hotels, restaurants, trails and lodges continue operating. Government offices follow the gazetted holiday (17–23 October), and banks and many local shops are likely to reduce hours or close around the main days. Private businesses are not required to close.
Are buses available during Dashain?
Yes, and authorities expect enough seats overall, but tickets for particular days and routes can still be hard to get. A late-September 2026 parliamentary committee report expected 600,000 to 1 million people to leave Kathmandu Valley, with the heaviest day on Phulpati (17 October). Book early and keep buffer days.
Are domestic flights operating during Dashain?
HGN did not find an official Dashain flight schedule or capacity statement, so confirm with your airline or agency. Mountain flights, including Lukla services, depend on early-morning weather windows, and in busy seasons they have often operated from Ramechhap (Manthali). Book flexibly, confirm the departure airport, and add buffer days.
Are teahouses open during Dashain?
Many are, but it varies. Autumn is peak season and lodges along established routes generally operate. Availability depends on the route, village, family and date, and menus may be simpler on main festival days. Ask your guide to call ahead and confirm the next night's bed rather than assuming it.
Can trekking permits be arranged during Dashain?
Restricted-area permits come from the Department of Immigration, and offices following the government calendar may have reduced service during the 17–23 October holiday. HGN found no official notice of permit-counter hours over Dashain, so finish permits and registrations before 17 October and carry copies.
Are guides and porters available during Dashain?
Often, but not automatically. Dashain is a major family festival for guides and porters, and some will want to be home for tika. Confirm who is guiding you and how festival days are handled early, respect agreed arrangements, and do not assume a last-minute replacement will be easy to find.
Is trekking during Dashain safe?
Dashain itself does not make trekking more dangerous, but it can add pressure to travel logistics, and the usual mountain risks remain: altitude, changing weather, remote terrain and limited signal. Clear autumn skies do not remove altitude illness risk. Keep acclimatisation days, check route and road conditions within 48 hours, and plan emergency communication.
Does Dashain affect trekking insurance or emergency rescue?
A festival does not automatically change an insurance policy. Policy wording, insured activity, altitude limit, medical benefits and exclusions decide cover. Evacuation, including by helicopter, depends on medical necessity, weather, terrain, landing conditions, aircraft availability and policy terms, and ground transport may be more appropriate. Confirm how to reach your provider before you leave.
