Nepal Trekking Insurance Requirements 2026: What Every Trekker Should Know
By Himalayan Guardian Nepal · Rules change; confirm current requirements with your licensed trekking agency before you travel.

"Do I need insurance to trek in Nepal?" sounds like a yes/no question. It isn't. Nepal trekking insurance requirements depend on your trekking area, permit type, itinerary, maximum altitude, trekking operator and activity. Insurance documents form part of the restricted-area permit process, most licensed agencies expect adequate cover, and high-altitude trekking without suitable cover is a serious financial and medical risk. This guide separates what is required, what is recommended and what is practically necessary, using official Nepal sources where they exist.
Is Trekking Insurance Mandatory in Nepal?
Short answer: We found no Nepal Tourism Board or Department of Immigration publication stating that every trekker must hold insurance. However, insurance documents are part of restricted-area permit applications, and licensed trekking agencies commonly require adequate high-altitude cover. So it is often required in practice, depending on route, permit and operator.
That answer has four layers:
- Nationwide legal requirement. Several commercial websites claim a rule introduced in April 2025 requiring insurance for all foreign trekkers, with fixed evacuation minimums and penalties. We could not locate that rule in NTB or Department of Immigration material, so we don't treat it as verified. If you see it repeated, look for the official notice.
- Restricted-area permits. Here there is an official hook (covered below).
- Operator requirements. Agencies set their own conditions, and these are usually the requirement you will actually meet.
- Practical necessity. Above roughly 2,500 m, altitude illness becomes possible, and most Nepal treks are remote enough that evacuation is complex. This is why insurance is treated as near-essential even where no rule compels it.
Key takeaway: "Mandatory" is true in some situations (restricted-area permit files, many agency bookings) and unproven as a blanket national rule. "Recommended" understates the practical reality for any trek that goes high.
What Do Official Nepal Authorities Say About Trekking Insurance?
Nepal's official trekking pages are more specific about permits and altitude safety than about insurance.
- Department of Immigration (DoI). Its trekking-permit page states that authorised agencies apply for restricted-area permits with a set of documents, which includes documents relating to the insurance of foreign trekkers and of the Nepali staff accompanying them. It also states that personal accident insurance must be provided to Nepali guides and porters.
- Nepal Tourism Board (NTB). Its TIMS page describes the card as agency-issued under the Revised TIMS Provision effective 31 March 2023, and does not describe TIMS as an insurance document. Its trekking-permit page covers restricted-area fees and route rules and does not, in the version we reviewed, set out an insurance rule.
- NTB safety guidance. NTB's "Safety in the Mountains" page warns that unwell trekkers above 2,500 m should treat symptoms as possible acute mountain sickness (AMS), advises limiting sleeping-altitude gain to 300–500 m per day above 2,500 m, and says severe symptoms mean descend.
Requirement vs recommendation, in plain terms: the official pages verified here treat insurance as a documentation element of restricted-area permits and treat altitude safety as guidance. Everything else, including specific evacuation minimums, comes from agencies, insurers or industry practice.
Do You Need Insurance for a Nepal Trekking Permit?
Not every permit works the same way. Nepal trekking uses several separate documents:
| Document | What it is | Issued by | Insurance? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restricted-area trekking permit | Special permit for regulated regions | Department of Immigration, via a licensed agency | Insurance documents are part of the agency's application file (per DoI) |
| National park / conservation area permit | Entry to protected areas (e.g., Sagarmatha, ACAP, MCAP) | Park/conservation authorities | Not an insurance instrument |
| TIMS card (e-TIMS) | Trekker registration/tracking | Via registered agency (NTB system) | Not insurance |
| Travel/trekking insurance policy | Contract with an insurer | Insurer | — |
The important point: a permit is a permission; an insurance policy is a financial and medical protection. Different permits are governed by different authorities and none should be assumed to share the same insurance rule.
Restricted-Area Trekking Permits
Restricted regions include Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Manaslu, Tsum Valley, Nar Phu (Manang), Humla and others listed by NTB with per-day or per-week fees.
- Permits come from the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu, applied for by a licensed trekking agency, not by individuals directly.
- The DoI page lists insurance documents for foreign trekkers and Nepali staff among the agency's application documents.
- Group size is changing. The DoI page text we saw still refers to a two-person minimum. On 22 March 2026, the Kathmandu Post reported that the DoI revised policy to let individual foreign tourists obtain restricted-area permits, provided they are accompanied by a guide and registered through an agency. Confirm the current position with your agency.
Insurance details vary between agencies and, in practice, so do accepted policies. We did not find an official minimum evacuation amount, so treat any specific dollar figure as agency- or insurer-specific unless the source is a government notice.
Does TIMS Require Travel Insurance?
No, a TIMS card is not an insurance policy, and NTB's TIMS page does not describe it as requiring one. TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) is a registration system. Under the revised provision effective 31 March 2023, NTB says specified routes require a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card, generated as an eCard with a QR code, with a fee of NPR 2,000 for most foreign applicants (NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals).
Two cautions:
- Enforcement differs by region and has been changing. NTB's page still lists Everest and Annapurna routes, while several operators report that TIMS is no longer checked in Khumbu or Annapurna. Don't rely on either; ask your agency what your route needs this season.
- Do not confuse TIMS with cover. A TIMS eCard helps authorities know who is on a trail. It does not pay for treatment or evacuation.
What Should Nepal Trekking Insurance Actually Cover?
Policy terms vary, so treat this as a comparison framework, not a promise of any policy's content.
- Trekking at your itinerary's maximum altitude: the policy must explicitly include trekking up to your highest point.
- Accidental medical expenses: hospital, doctor, diagnostics in Nepal.
- Altitude-related illness: AMS, HAPE, HACE wording, and whether treatment is covered at your altitude.
- Emergency medical transportation: from a remote location to a medical facility.
- Evacuation methods: helicopter where medically necessary and covered, plus ground rescue or ambulance.
- Repatriation: return home if medically required.
- Accidental death / permanent disability: where the policy provides it.
- Search and rescue: whether it is included and its limits.
- Exclusions: alcohol, pre-existing conditions, unreported conditions, undisclosed activities.
- Deductibles / excess: what you pay before cover applies.
- Activity definitions: trekking vs mountaineering.
- Pre-authorisation: whether the insurer or its assistance partner must approve evacuation first.
Key takeaway: The most common gaps are altitude ceilings, unclear altitude-illness wording, and evacuation that requires approval you cannot obtain in time.
Why Maximum Trekking Altitude Matters
Your policy is only as useful as the altitude tier it covers. Insured altitude must be at least as high as the highest point you will reach on your itinerary, including side trips and viewpoints.
Insurers tier cover differently. Common breakpoints seen across the market include cover up to about 3,500 m, up to about 5,000 m, above 5,000 m, and up to roughly 6,000 m. These are examples of common structures, not a universal standard, and each insurer defines its own limits.
Why it matters in Nepal:
- Popular routes exceed 5,000 m. Everest Base Camp sits near 5,364 m and the frequently added Kala Patthar viewpoint is higher (roughly 5,550–5,650 m depending on source). Annapurna Circuit crosses Thorong La at about 5,416 m. A policy capped at 5,000 m or 5,500 m may not cover a day you would otherwise assume is routine.
- Altitude illness risk rises with height. The CDC Yellow Book notes that itineraries on some Nepal routes, particularly Everest Base Camp, push the limits of many people's ability to acclimatise, and that prevalence of altitude illness can approach 30% at higher elevations even on standard schedules.
- Insurers may decline claims outside insured limits. This is a policy-wording issue, not a Nepal rule.
Practical step: write down your highest sleeping altitude and highest day-trip altitude, then choose a plan whose ceiling exceeds both.
Standard Travel Insurance vs High-Altitude Trekking Insurance
Policy wording varies; this reflects typical differences, not any one product.| Feature | Standard travel insurance | High-altitude trekking cover |
|---|---|---|
| Normal tourism (city, sightseeing) | Typically covered | Typically covered |
| Trekking | Often limited or excluded, especially "high-altitude" | Explicitly included |
| Altitude limits | Frequently capped at a low ceiling | Tiered up to a stated maximum altitude |
| Altitude illness (AMS/HAPE/HACE) | May be excluded above the cap | Addressed in the wording, subject to plan and limits |
| Emergency evacuation | Sometimes only "medically necessary" with restrictions | Built around remote-area evacuation |
| Adventure-sport exclusions | Commonly present | Trekking defined; mountaineering may still be excluded |
| Helicopter evacuation | Depends on wording and authorization | Typically addressed, still conditional |
| Trekking above defined limits | Not covered | Only up to the stated maximum |
The lesson: having "travel insurance" is not the same as having cover for your trek.
Does Nepal Trekking Insurance Cover Helicopter Rescue?Sometimes, if your policy includes emergency evacuation, the helicopter is medically necessary, the altitude is within your insured limit and the operation is feasible. Helicopter evacuation is not automatic and not guaranteed.
Conditions that commonly apply:
- Medical necessity. The evacuation must be justified by your condition, not convenience.
- Authorization. Many insurers or their assistance partners must approve or coordinate the evacuation.
- Operational feasibility. Weather, visibility, landing sites and altitude can prevent flights.
- Policy limits and exclusions. Altitude ceilings, sub-limits, excluded activities.
- Alternatives. Some situations are handled by ground transport or by descending to a lower altitude.

Does Trekking Insurance Cover Altitude Sickness?
It can, depending on the policy and altitude tier. Some policies cover treatment of altitude illness up to the insured altitude; others exclude it or cap it. Read the wording rather than the marketing.
Definitions, per CDC guidance:
- AMS (acute mountain sickness): the most common form, with symptoms such as headache, nausea and fatigue after ascent.
- HACE (high-altitude cerebral edema): brain swelling, rare but potentially fatal; requires descent.
- HAPE (high-altitude pulmonary edema): fluid in the lungs; also serious and requires descent.
CDC guidance recommends gradual ascent, and NTB's guidance advises against increasing sleeping altitude by more than 300–500 m per day above 2,500 m. Insurance pays for problems; it does not replace acclimatisation. This article is general information, not medical advice; speak to a travel-medicine clinician about your own risk. More: altitude sickness insurance.
Trekking vs Mountaineering: Why the Definition Matters
Insurers separate trekking (walking on established trails) from mountaineering, peak climbing and expeditions, which involve technical equipment such as ropes, crampons or ice axes. A policy that covers trekking to 5,500 m may exclude a trekking-peak ascent even if the altitude is within the limit. Peak climbs like Island Peak or Mera Peak reach roughly 6,000 m or above and usually need mountaineering-specific cover. Check the activity definition and exclusions before assuming a "6,000 m" plan covers a climb.
Do Trekking Companies Require Insurance?
Often, yes. Even where no nationwide law is confirmed, licensed agencies commonly ask for a policy certificate before a trek starts, because they handle permit files, evacuation coordination and liability. Requirements vary by operator and itinerary. Some check altitude limits, evacuation wording or emergency numbers. If your agency asks for proof, that is a practical requirement even if it is not a statute.
Can You Buy Trekking Insurance After Arriving in Nepal?
Often yes, but it depends on the insurer. For CTG, travellers already in Nepal may purchase provided their trek or covered journey has not started. Coverage cannot be applied retroactively, and the traveller selects a future coverage start date. This is CTG's rule, not a rule for every insurer; some insurers impose waiting periods or refuse cover once you have left your home country. Buying before you fly is simpler.
What Documents Should Trekkers Carry?
Officially, the NTB permit page says the trekking permit must be kept with the trekker and shown to immigration officials or police on request. Beyond that, these are practical, not legally mandated:
- Passport and visa copy
- Relevant permits (restricted-area permit, park/conservation permit, e-TIMS where issued)
- Insurance certificate, policy number and the insurer's 24/7 emergency number
- Digital copy (saved offline) plus a paper copy
- Emergency contact and agency/guide contact details
- Medication list and any allergies

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is trekking insurance mandatory in Nepal? Not as a single nationwide rule we could verify in official sources. Insurance documents are part of restricted-area permit files, and most licensed agencies require adequate cover, so it is often required in practice.
2. What insurance do I need for trekking in Nepal? A policy that covers Nepal, trekking, your maximum itinerary altitude, medical treatment, emergency evacuation and your travel dates, with exclusions you have read.
3. Does TIMS require insurance? No. TIMS is a trekker registration system, not an insurance policy, and NTB's TIMS page does not describe an insurance requirement.
4. Is insurance required for restricted-area trekking permits? The Department of Immigration lists insurance documents for foreign trekkers and Nepali staff among the documents agencies submit for restricted-area permits. Your agency confirms the current details.
5. Does travel insurance cover helicopter rescue in Nepal? Sometimes. It generally depends on medical necessity, insured altitude, authorisation, operational feasibility and policy terms. It is not automatic.
6. What altitude should trekking insurance cover? At least the highest point of your itinerary, including side trips. Insurers use different altitude tiers, so check your policy's stated limit.
7. Does trekking insurance cover AMS? It can, depending on the policy, plan and insured altitude. Check the altitude-illness wording and any exclusions.
8. Can I buy trekking insurance after arriving in Nepal? Sometimes. With CTG, yes, provided your trek has not started, and coverage starts on a future date you select. Other insurers differ.
9. Do I need separate helicopter evacuation insurance? Not necessarily. Many policies include emergency evacuation within their medical cover. Check limits, conditions and whether helicopter evacuation is addressed.
10. Does standard travel insurance cover Everest Base Camp? Often not without explicit high-altitude trekking cover. Check the altitude limit against your highest point, which may exceed 5,500 m.
11. Does Nepal trekking insurance cover HAPE and HACE? It may, depending on the policy and altitude tier. Treatment of these conditions is a common source of policy limits, so read the wording.
12. What documents should I carry while trekking? Your permits (which must be kept with you and shown on request), passport, insurance certificate with the 24/7 emergency number, and emergency contacts, ideally offline as well as on paper.
Conclusion
The right question about Nepal trekking insurance requirements is not simply whether you have "travel insurance." It is whether your policy covers Nepal, trekking, your maximum itinerary altitude, relevant medical emergencies, evacuation, your activity type, your dates and the exclusions in the wording. Requirements differ by permit, route and operator, so confirm with your agency and read your policy. If you would like a Nepal-focused option with altitude-tiered plans, you can review CTG.
