What Do Trekkers Really Look For When Choosing Trekking Insurance in Nepal? A Sales Perspective
Biraj Tamang, Sales Executive, Himalayan Guardian Nepal Pvt. Ltd.
In January 2026, I went to join Himalayan Guardian Nepal and thought that insurance for trekking was a matter of negotiation. A person requests a quote, I provide a number, they compare to the next number and the lesser number is the winner.
Having seen the agencies in Kathmandu, spoken with travellers and responded to their queries, and followed up on policies for months, I can say this is not how things are usually done. Price is important, but it's not the primary question. Here is what trekkers, and the agencies who guide them, actually look for.
1. Will it really be able to cover a rescue in Nepal?
This is the question behind most conversations, even when it is asked politely in a different way.
There are many travelers who come with a basic travel policy from their home country. The surprise comes in the fine print: Rescuing outside of Nepal is not covered, transportation from the scene to a medical facility may not be covered, and medical rescue due to altitude sickness is rarely covered. If you find out this only after something has gone wrong, you're not alone.
So the first question a responsible hiker wants to ask is a resounding yes: Covered for helicopter and first site rescue in Nepal? Does this include altitude sickness? It is a policy specifically for Nepal, that provides a straight answer, and that is more of a win than any discount.
2. Altitude: "What happens if I get sick up high?
Trekkers are aware of the fact that the Himalayas are not like any other place. Weather can shift quickly, elevation can impact body functions, and assistance is not in the same vicinity as the nearest road.
So they ask questions about altitude sickness. What is considered covered? What do I have to demonstrate? Are there any cost-share for Helicopter evacuation?
I have come to know how to respond to these answers honestly, including those that aren't as interesting to sell. With our CTG cover, for instance, a helicopter rescue due to altitude sickness is 15% co-pay by the traveller. I explain why: One of the reasons is the close relationship between altitude sickness and acclimatization and travel pace, and cost-sharing enables helicopters for real emergencies. I think that trekkers and agencies value that honesty over a promise that seems too convenient
3. Speed: "Who decides and how fast?
A policy that is good on paper, is of little use if approvals take too long to be released allowing for rescue. However, traditional insurers are not known for their flexibility and often require authorization to start a rescue, an issue when a trekker is at 5,000m in increasingly bad weather.
There's a lot of concern about this with the agencies I talk to. They are interested in who is in charge, if anyone is picking them up at night and how fast a plan is moving. We have a model that includes insurance as a part of the rescue operation itself and includes a 24/7 coordination center. Our service commitments are very straightforward: SOS is activated within 30 seconds of pressing SOS, rescue is called for within 5 minutes and a rescue plan is confirmed and action initiated 30 minutes thereafter.
I am also careful to declare what we don't promise: a specific rescue method. A ground evacuation or staged transfer may sometimes be safer than a helicopter. The idea is to select the safest option in actual conditions.
4. Being found: "What if there is no signal?
Cell phone reception is poor in the mountains. In many places, such as valleys, gorges and forests, there is no signal anyway, and a phone can only be used as a secondary aid. Hence, the question about the satellite device, rather than the policy, is gaining popularity among trekkers.
With a satellite communicator, you’re never truly out of reach. It works without mobile network, shares your exact location, and has a one-button SOS that alerts help when you need it. For many trekkers, simply knowing someone can see where they are makes the difference between worrying and walking with confidence.
5. Price, but price in context
Price is still a factor and I don't pretend otherwise. However, the more valuable discussion is centered around fit. Does the plan correspond with the traveler's altitude, distance and age? Taking a 14-day hike at an average elevation of 2,000m is a whole new ball game compared to a high-altitude hike, and planning around those details means you aren't paying for cover you don't need, and you also make sure you don't leave out any cover you do need.
The 3 things I discuss with an agency when I show them these options is the altitude band, number of days, and insurance or insurance plus the satellite device.
6. Claims: What will I have to do afterwards?
Nobody wants to think about claims but this is where trust is earned or lost. Visitors want to know who to call, to find out what paperwork is required, and whether they will be left with paperwork to chase back to their foreign country.
Objective records, including photographs and video footage of the scene and a detailed timeline of the rescue, make claims run far smoother and disputes far less likely. I always remind trekkers that preserving evidence of their condition protects them. Since our staff is able to locally prepare the materials for claims to be processed the moment rescue operations commence, this process is far less stressful.
7. Trust in the person recommending it
The part that surprised me most is how often the decision comes down to the relationship. Most of my work is with travel agencies and trekking companies, and for them recommending insurance means putting their own reputation on the line.
The most difficult hurdle was getting agencies to move to a new safety platform in a competitive marketplace. The magic was not a slick pitch. It was being very knowledgeable about the product, answering their questions truthfully, staying in touch with them regularly, and being there when they needed help. That practice proved effective over the months to win many cautious agencies over as partners. Sales in this industry is as much about trust as it is about persuasion.
What I tell every trekker to ask
If you are choosing trekking insurance for Nepal, ask these questions before you pay:
- Does it explicitly cover rescue and evacuation within Nepal?
- Does it cover altitude sickness, and what are the conditions and any co-payment?
- Who coordinates a rescue, and is that service available 24/7?
- What if I have no phone signal? Is there a satellite option?
- Is the plan matched to my altitude, route and trip length?
- What will the claims process look like, and what evidence should I keep?
Final thought
Trekkers are not actually purchasing a policy. They are putting their trust in someone that should go wrong in the mountains, someone will find them, make a quick decision and take care of the rest. At Himalayan Guardian Nepal that is the one we strive towards every day, and that's why I'm proud to do my work.
