Best Season for Trekking in Nepal: A Month-by-Month Guide to Choosing the Right Time
Suhana Shrestha
The best season for trekking in Nepal is generally autumn (late September to November) and spring (March to May), because these two windows offer the most stable weather, the clearest mountain views, and the safest trail and high-pass conditions across most of the country's major routes. But "best" is not the same for every trekker: the ideal month depends heavily on which region you're heading to, how high you're going, whether your route is a rain shadow protection trek, how experienced you are, and whether you're prioritizing clear views, quiet trails, or lower costs.
A trek to Everest Base Camp in October behaves very differently from a trek to Upper Mustang in July, even though both are happening in "the wrong season" by conventional wisdom for one of them. Altitude changes the weather. Region changes the rainfall. And the difficulty of a route changes how much margin you have if the weather doesn't cooperate.
This guide breaks Nepal's trekking calendar down season by season and month by month, then applies it to the specific routes trekkers ask about most, Everest Base Camp, the Three Passes, Gokyo Lakes, Annapurna Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal, Manaslu, Langtang, Upper Mustang, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Dolpo, before covering the altitude and safety planning that matters regardless of which month you choose.
Nepal Trekking Seasons Overview
Nepal has four broad trekking seasons, shaped primarily by the South Asian monsoon system and the Himalayan altitude gradient. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Nepal's national meteorological authority, defines the normal monsoon window for the country as 13 June to 2 October, a four-month period (June–September) that governs almost everything else about the trekking calendar, including when trails dry out, when visibility returns, and when the peak season crowds arrive.
| Season | Months | Weather | Temperature trend | Visibility | Rain/snow | Trail conditions | Crowd levels | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March–May | Warming, increasingly stable | Mild at low/mid altitude, cold above 4,000 m | Good, occasionally hazy at lower elevations | Occasional afternoon showers, rhododendrons in bloom | Dry, firm | High (second-busiest season) | Rhododendron forests, high passes, varied itineraries | Pre-monsoon haze at low elevation, afternoon cloud build-up |
| Summer/Monsoon | June–August | Wet, humid | Warm at low altitude | Poor at low/mid elevation (cloud, mist) | Frequent rain, landslide risk on hill trails | Muddy, slippery, leeches on forested trails | Low | Rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar-Phu), botany, flight-independent low routes | Flight delays, trail washouts, leeches below ~3,000 m |
| Autumn | September–November | Post-monsoon, stabilizing then clear | Mild, cooling through November | Excellent, especially October–November | Minimal after mid/late September | Dry, well-maintained | Very high (peak season, especially October) | Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, most classic routes | Crowded trailheads and teahouses in October, cold nights by late November |
| Winter | December–February | Cold, dry, clear | Cold to very cold at altitude | Very good, crisp skies | Snowfall likely above ~4,000 m, closing some high passes | Snow and ice on high passes, dry lower down | Low | Lower-altitude treks (Poon Hill, Langtang lower sections, Annapurna foothills), solitude seekers | Closed high passes, short daylight, cold-related risk |
Two structural facts explain almost every seasonal recommendation in this guide. First, altitude changes the effective season: a valley at 2,000 m can be pleasant while a pass at 5,400 m is already snowbound. Second, regional rainfall is not uniform, areas in the rain shadow of the Himalayan massif, such as Upper Mustang and parts of Dolpo, receive dramatically less monsoon precipitation than the mid-hills, which is why some routes remain trekkable even in July and August.
Month-by-Month Nepal Trekking GuideJanuary. Cold and dry across the country. Kathmandu and the mid-hills see clear, crisp days with cold mornings; high-altitude routes above 4,000 m are firmly in winter conditions, with overnight temperatures well below freezing and snow on the trail. Lower-elevation treks such as Ghorepani–Poon Hill, the lower Annapurna foothills, and short Langtang itineraries remain accessible and are notably quiet. High passes (Cho La, Thorong La, Renjo La) are best avoided by inexperienced parties this month unless traveling with experienced local guides equipped for snow conditions.
February. Similar to January but with the first hints of transition by late month, slightly longer daylight, and pre-monsoon warming beginning at lower elevations. Still cold and potentially snowy at altitude. A good month for photographers who want clear Himalayan skies and are prepared for genuinely cold nights, and for trekkers prioritizing solitude on lower routes.
March. The start of spring and one of the more popular shoulder-to-peak months. Rhododendron forests begin flowering at mid-altitude (roughly 2,000–3,000 m), days warm noticeably, and visibility is generally good, though pre-monsoon haze can build in the Kathmandu Valley and lower hills by late month. High passes are more viable than in winter but still require proper gear.
April. Widely considered one of the two best months of the year for a broad range of routes. Rhododendron blooms peak in many mid-hill forests, daytime temperatures at trekking altitude are comfortable, and most high passes are open with manageable snow conditions. Trails are busy, particularly on Everest and Annapurna routes.
May. Late spring: warmer, with more frequent afternoon cloud build-up and the first pre-monsoon showers, especially toward month's end. Mornings tend to offer the clearest mountain views before afternoon haze or cloud rolls in. Still a strong month for high-altitude routes, with somewhat thinner crowds than April.
June. The monsoon typically arrives in eastern Nepal around 13 June (DHM's long-term normal onset date), though onset varies by several days to weeks year to year. Early June can still offer trekkable conditions in many regions before the rains fully establish; by mid-to-late June, expect increasing cloud, rain, and reduced visibility on non-rain-shadow routes.
July. Deep monsoon. Frequent rainfall, humid conditions, and slippery or leech-prone trails on forested mid-hill routes. This is the strongest month to consider rain-shadow trekking, Upper Mustang and parts of Dolpo receive a fraction of the precipitation that falls on Annapurna or Everest-side routes during the same period, because they sit in the Himalayan rain shadow.
August. Still firmly monsoon season nationwide, with continued rain, cloud cover, and elevated landslide risk on exposed hill trails. Domestic mountain flights (notably Lukla) are prone to delay or cancellation due to poor visibility. Rain-shadow routes remain the most reliable option; lower-altitude cultural and valley walks are possible with appropriate rain gear and flexible scheduling.
September. Transitional month. Early September is often still within the monsoon window; conditions typically begin clearing from mid-to-late September as the rains withdraw (DHM's long-term average withdrawal date is 2 October, though in several recent years withdrawal has been delayed into October). Late September can already offer good trekking on many routes, especially at lower and mid elevations.
October. Nepal's single busiest and most reliable trekking month. Post-monsoon air is clear, skies are typically stable, temperatures are comfortable across most trekking altitudes, and trail conditions are firm and dry. This is peak season on Everest, Annapurna, and Manaslu routes, book accommodations and permits with a buffer, and expect crowded teahouses and trailheads, particularly around the Dashain and Tihar festival period.
November. Continues autumn's clear, stable weather with cooling temperatures, especially by late month when nighttime temperatures at altitude drop sharply. Crowds thin somewhat compared to October while visibility often remains excellent, making it a favorite among trekkers who want autumn conditions with fewer people on the trail.
December. Early December can still carry autumn-like clarity at lower elevations before winter cold sets in more firmly. By mid-to-late December, high-altitude routes face increasing cold and possible snowfall on passes; lower-elevation treks remain viable and are notably peaceful.
Spring Trekking in Nepal
Spring (March–May) is Nepal's second major trekking season and, for many travelers, its most visually rewarding. Rhododendron forests, Nepal's national flower, bloom in sequence up the elevation gradient from March through May, turning mid-altitude trails on routes like Ghorepani–Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, and the lower Annapurna region into corridors of red, pink, and white blossom.
Temperatures rise steadily through the season: cool but comfortable at trekking altitude in March, warmer through April, and warmest (with more afternoon cloud) by May. Above 4,000 m, nights remain cold throughout spring regardless of the warmth lower down, so layering for a wide daily temperature range is essential.
Visibility is generally strong in the mornings, with cloud frequently building through the afternoon, a pattern that rewards early starts, both for photography and for reaching viewpoints before clouds obscure peaks. High passes on the Everest Three Passes circuit and the Annapurna Circuit's Thorong La are typically accessible by April, though early-season snow can still affect conditions in March.
Spring is a peak season, which means busier trails and teahouses, particularly in April, alongside the trade-off of consistently good trekking conditions across a wider range of routes than any other season except autumn.
Autumn Trekking in Nepal
Autumn (September–November) is widely regarded as Nepal's primary trekking season, and the keyword data reflects that reality: search interest in "best season/time for trekking in Nepal" and month-specific autumn searches consistently outpace other seasons. The reason is straightforward, the monsoon's withdrawal (normally around early October, per DHM) leaves the atmosphere unusually clear, rainfall drops sharply, and trail conditions firm up across nearly every region simultaneously.
October is the peak of peak season. Skies are typically at their clearest of the year, mountain views are considered by many trekkers and guides to be at their best, and temperatures across most trekking altitudes are comfortable during the day with cold but manageable nights. The trade-off is crowding: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, and the Annapurna Circuit see their highest trekker volumes of the year in October, especially around the Dashain and Tihar festival period, when teahouse space and flights can book out.
November extends autumn's clear-weather advantage into a somewhat quieter window, though nighttime cold intensifies noticeably by late month, particularly at higher camps. By contrast, September (especially early September) can still carry residual monsoon instability depending on the year's specific withdrawal timing, so late September into October is the most reliably clear stretch.
It's worth stating plainly: autumn's reputation as Nepal's "best" season is well earned on average, but it is not a guarantee. Weather varies year to year, region to region, and with altitude, a clear day in the Khumbu valley says nothing definitive about conditions on a 5,400 m pass the same afternoon.
Winter Trekking in Nepal
Winter (December–February) is Nepal's quietest trekking season and, for the right route, one of its most rewarding for solitude and photography. Days are typically cold but clear, with crisp Himalayan skies and excellent long-distance visibility once storm systems pass. The core limitation is altitude: high passes above roughly 5,000 m, Cho La, Renjo La, Thorong La, Larkya La, can become snowbound or require technical caution, and daylight hours are noticeably shorter than in spring or autumn.
Lower-altitude routes remain very much open for business in winter. Ghorepani–Poon Hill, shorter Langtang itineraries, and lower sections of the Annapurna foothills are commonly trekked through the winter months, often with near-empty trails and teahouses compared to their autumn crowds. Winter treks to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp are done every year by well-prepared trekkers, but they demand cold-weather gear, flexibility around weather delays, and realistic expectations about high-pass crossings.
Monsoon Trekking in Nepal
Monsoon (roughly June–September, with the DHM's long-term normal window running from mid-June to early October) is Nepal's least popular trekking season for good reason on most routes: persistent rainfall, reduced visibility, slippery and sometimes landslide-prone hill trails, leeches on forested mid-altitude paths, and a higher risk of domestic flight delays or cancellations, particularly on the Lukla route serving Everest.
That said, monsoon does not mean trekking is impossible everywhere in Nepal, a common misconception the keyword data itself hints at, with real, if modest, search volume for "monsoon trekking in nepal" and "nepal trekking monsoon season." The key is understanding Nepal's rain-shadow geography. Regions on the northern, leeward side of the main Himalayan range most notably Upper Mustang, and to a meaningful extent parts of Dolpo and the Nar-Phu valley sit in a rain shadow that blocks most of the monsoon's moisture before it reaches them. These areas receive dramatically less rainfall than Annapurna, Everest, or Langtang during the same months, making them some of the few genuinely reliable monsoon-season trekking options in the country.
Outside rain-shadow regions, monsoon trekking is still done, particularly by travelers drawn to lush, green landscapes, quiet trails, and lower costs, but it requires realistic planning: waterproof gear, flexible itineraries that build in buffer days for flight delays, and acceptance that mountain views will be intermittent at best.
Best Time by Trek
Different routes reward different months, largely because of altitude, aspect, and how much of the trail sits in or out of the rain shadow.
| Trek | Recommended Months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everest Base Camp / Three Passes | March–May, late Sept–Nov | High passes (Kongma La, Cho La, Renjo La) need dry, stable conditions; Lukla flights are most reliable outside monsoon and deep winter |
| Gokyo Lakes | March–May, Oct–Nov | Same weather system as EBC; autumn offers the clearest lake and Cho Oyu views |
| Annapurna Base Camp | March–May, Oct–Nov | Lower maximum altitude (~4,130 m) makes it more forgiving in shoulder-season windows than the higher passes |
| Annapurna Circuit | March–May, Oct–Nov | Thorong La (5,416 m) is the limiting factor needs dry, stable conditions and is frequently closed by heavy winter snow |
| Mardi Himal | March–May, Oct–Nov | Lower altitude and shorter duration make it accessible slightly later into early winter than higher routes |
| Manaslu Circuit | March–May, Sept–Nov | Larkya La (5,106 m) has similar constraints to Thorong La; restricted-area permits also favor the established peak windows |
| Langtang Valley | March–May, Oct–Nov, with lower sections viable in winter | Closer to Kathmandu and lower in maximum altitude than Everest/Annapurna high routes, giving more seasonal flexibility |
| Upper Mustang | Year-round feasible; June–Aug notably viable due to rain shadow | One of Nepal's few genuinely reliable monsoon-season treks; also excellent in spring and autumn |
| Kanchenjunga | March–May, Sept–Nov | Remote, high-altitude, and less infrastructure-supported than the classic routes, so stable-weather windows matter more |
| Makalu | March–May, Sept–Nov | High, remote, and technically demanding; narrow weather windows are more consequential than on well-trodden routes |
| Dolpo | March–May, Sept–Nov, with partial rain-shadow benefit in summer | Similar rain-shadow advantage to Mustang, though less pronounced; still best in the classic shoulder seasons for most itineraries |
Best Time Based on Traveler Priority
October and November consistently offer Nepal's clearest post-monsoon skies, followed closely by April. Early mornings are the most reliable window for photography before afternoon cloud builds.
Best time for stable trekking weather
Late September through November, and April, when the monsoon has fully withdrawn or not yet arrived and pre-monsoon instability hasn't set in.
Best time for fewer crowds
November (late month), February, and June/early September — autumn's shoulder edges and the depths of winter offer clear-ish conditions on many routes without October's peak-season density. Choose November if you want autumn's visibility without October's crowding.
Best time for photographers
October–November for classic clear-sky mountain photography; March–April for rhododendron-forest and wildflower photography combined with mountain backdrops.
Best time for beginners
October and April - the most forgiving combination of stable weather, well-marked trails, open teahouses, and other trekkers on the route if assistance is needed. Choose October if you want the most predictable, well-supported first Himalayan trek.
Best time for experienced trekkers
Winter (Dec–Feb) or monsoon rain-shadow routes (Upper Mustang, Dolpo) for those seeking solitude, technical winter conditions, or off-season logistics, provided they have the experience and gear to manage the added risk. Consider winter if you have cold-weather experience and want empty trails.
Best time for high passes
Late March–May and Oct–Nov, when snow accumulation from the previous winter has cleared but the next winter's snow hasn't yet closed the route. High passes above ~5,000 m are the most weather-sensitive element of any Nepal itinerary.
Best time for lower-altitude trekking
Year-round is genuinely viable for routes like Ghorepani–Poon Hill or short Langtang itineraries, with winter offering cold-but-clear solitude and monsoon best avoided due to leeches and slippery trails rather than altitude risk.
Best time for budget-conscious travelers
Monsoon (rain-shadow routes aside) and deep winter tend to see lower demand, which can translate to more flexible teahouse pricing and availability, though this should be weighed against the practical trade-offs of each season. Consider monsoon if budget and solitude matter more to you than guaranteed mountain views.
Trekking Safety and Altitude
Choosing the right season dramatically improves the odds of good weather and clear trails but it does not eliminate the fundamental risks of high-altitude travel. Even in the most reliable months, trekkers should plan around altitude, sudden weather changes, and the practical realities of trekking in remote terrain.
Altitude sickness and acclimatization. According to the Wilderness Medical Society's 2024 clinical guidelines, unacclimatized travelers face meaningfully elevated risk of acute mountain sickness (AMS) above roughly 2,500 m, and the guidelines emphasize that sleeping altitude—not just altitude reached during the day—is the key variable. The widely used clinical guidance is to avoid increasing sleeping elevation by more than about 500 m per day once above 3,000 m, and to build in a rest or acclimatization day roughly every 3–4 days or every 1,000 m of net gain. For a more detailed explanation of prevention, symptoms, and treatment, see our altitude sickness guide. This is precisely why well-designed Everest and Annapurna itineraries include built-in acclimatization days at places like Namche Bazaar or Manang, regardless of season.
Sudden weather changes. Even in October or April, Himalayan weather can shift quickly at altitude, a clear morning can give way to snow or whiteout conditions on a high pass by afternoon. This is one reason experienced guides favor early starts on pass-crossing days.
Snowfall, injuries, and illness. Winter snow can close high passes with little warning; even in shoulder seasons, unexpected early or late-season snowfall occurs. Slips, falls, and gastrointestinal illness remain among the most common reasons trekkers need assistance on the trail, independent of season.
Route disruption and limited communication. Many Nepal trekking routes pass through terrain with limited or no mobile signal, particularly beyond the larger villages. Flight disruption especially on the Lukla route to Everest is common during monsoon and possible in winter storms, and can affect itinerary timing regardless of how well the trekking days themselves are planned.
Emergency planning and evacuation preparedness. Because many trekking routes are remote and multi-day from the nearest road, having a clear plan for communication, location tracking, and emergency response matters on every trek not only the objectively riskier ones. This is where preparation goes beyond gear and fitness and into the logistics of what happens if something does go wrong.
This is also where Himalayan Guardian Nepal (HGN) fits into a trekker's preparation. HGN is not a trekking agency or tour operator; it is a Nepal-based provider specializing in trekking protection for Nepal, helping trekkers access insurance where applicable, 24/7 emergency assistance, rescue coordination, and helicopter evacuation support. For trekkers heading into remote, low-signal terrain; Kanchenjunga, Dolpo, Manaslu, and the higher stretches of the Everest and Annapurna routes among them; HGN's GPS and satellite tracking solutions, including its Tracer M-3 device, are designed to support communication and location visibility precisely in the conditions where a mobile phone alone won't help.
None of this replaces sound trekking judgment, a qualified guide, and appropriate acclimatization but it supports the preparation layer that sits underneath a well-chosen season and itinerary.
Preparing for Your Trek: From Season to Safety
Choosing the right month is the first decision in a longer preparation sequence: right season → right itinerary → acclimatization → equipment → weather monitoring → communication → emergency preparedness → trekking protection. A well-timed trek still benefits from a realistic itinerary with acclimatization days built in, cold- and wet-weather gear appropriate to the season chosen, a way to monitor weather and trail conditions as the trek progresses, and a communication and emergency plan for the sections of trail where mobile coverage disappears.
As part of that last step, many trekkers arrange trekking protection and emergency-assistance coverage before departure, the kind of preparation Himalayan Guardian Nepal supports through its emergency assistance, rescue coordination, and tracking services so that the question of "what happens if something goes wrong" has an answer before you're on the trail, not after.
Conclusion
There is no single best month for trekking in Nepal, there is a best month for your route, altitude, and priorities. Autumn (late September–November) and spring (March–May) remain the strongest all-around choices for most classic routes, October in particular for reliability and views, November for a quieter version of the same conditions, and April for rhododendrons alongside stable high-altitude weather. Winter rewards those willing to trade high passes for solitude on lower routes, and monsoon, far from being universally off-limits, opens a genuine window onto rain-shadow regions like Upper Mustang.
Choosing when to trek is only one part of Himalayan preparation. Whichever season you choose, altitude, weather, and remoteness remain constant variables which is why pairing the right timing with sound acclimatization planning and a clear emergency-preparedness strategy matters on every Nepal trek. Himalayan Guardian Nepal supports that layer of preparation, from trekking protection to 24/7 emergency assistance and satellite tracking for remote sections of the trail, so that your season planning is backed by a realistic safety plan.
