Everest Base Camp Insurance: Complete 2026 Guide
Suhana Shrestha
Everest Base Camp reaches about 5,364 metres, and many trekkers continue higher to Kala Patthar at around 5,545 metres. At these elevations, ordinary travel insurance may not be enough.
Some policies limit hiking or trekking by altitude. Others exclude certain adventure activities or apply separate rules to medical evacuation and helicopter rescue.
For an Everest Base Camp trek, choose insurance that covers your planned trekking activity and your highest point. It should also provide suitable emergency medical, altitude illness and evacuation benefits. Check the helicopter terms, exclusions and emergency procedures before you buy.
The right policy is not simply the cheapest one or the one labelled “adventure travel.” It is the one that matches your actual route.
This guide explains what Everest Base Camp insurance should cover, what altitude limit to look for, how helicopter evacuation works, what happens with altitude sickness, and how to check an existing policy before your trek.
Important: This guide provides general information, not personal insurance or medical advice. Benefits, limits and exclusions differ between policies. Always check the current policy wording and confirm unclear terms with the insurer or provider.
What Is the Best Travel Insurance for Everest Base Camp?
The best travel insurance for Everest Base Camp is one that covers high-altitude trekking at your highest planned elevation and provides suitable medical treatment, altitude sickness, emergency evacuation and assistance benefits. It should also have clear rules for helicopter evacuation, exclusions and claims.
There is no single policy that is automatically best for every trekker.
Your route, age, trip length, health, country of residence and existing insurance can all affect what you need.
For most EBC travellers, the key questions are simple:
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Trekking activity | Your policy must cover the activity you are doing |
| Maximum altitude | EBC and Kala Patthar are above 5,000 m |
| Emergency medical treatment | Illness or injury may require treatment during the trek |
| AMS, HAPE and HACE | Altitude illness may have separate conditions |
| Medical evacuation | You may need transport to appropriate medical care |
| Helicopter evacuation | It may be available only under specific conditions |
| Search and rescue | This can be different from medical evacuation |
| Repatriation | Serious cases may require onward arrangements |
| Trip cancellation/interruption | Useful if a covered event changes the trip |
| Emergency assistance | You need to know who to contact during an incident |
| Exclusions | An exclusion can override a listed benefit |
| Claims process | Documentation and authorization may be required |
The policy wording matters more than the marketing page.
Travel insurance with suitable high-altitude and evacuation cover is strongly recommended for the Everest Base Camp trek.
However, three different issues often get mixed together: government rules, trekking-company requirements and sensible risk management.
A trekking company may require you to show suitable insurance before joining a trip. This is an operator requirement, not automatically a national insurance law.
Travellers should also check the latest Nepal entry, trekking and protected-area rules before departure.
From a safety point of view, the case for suitable insurance is much clearer. UK government travel advice for Nepal tells trekkers to make sure their insurance covers mountain rescue services and helicopter costs.
Nepal Tourism Board also treats the Everest Base Camp route as a high-altitude trek where proper acclimatization is important.
The practical question is therefore not only:
“Am I required to have insurance?”
It is:
“If I become sick or injured above 5,000 metres, does my insurance actually cover what may happen next?”
Why Altitude Matters for EBC Insurance
Altitude is one of the most important things to check when buying insurance for Everest Base Camp.
The CDC lists Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,400 metres and notes that Everest-region trekkers routinely spend time at very high elevations. It also warns that standard EBC itineraries can challenge the body's ability to acclimatize.
Insurance companies may also use altitude when deciding which activities or claims fall within a policy.
That means you should check the highest point of your itinerary, not only the name of the trek.
Typical Everest Base Camp Route Altitudes
| Location | Approx. altitude | Insurance relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Lukla | 2,860 m | Many EBC treks begin here |
| Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m | Trekkers are already at significant altitude |
| Tengboche | ~3,860 m | Above some lower hiking limits |
| Dingboche | ~4,360 m | High-altitude trekking |
| Lobuche | ~4,930 m | Close to 5,000 m |
| Gorak Shep | ~5,100 m | Final settlement before Base Camp |
| Everest Base Camp | ~5,364 m | Main trek destination |
| Kala Patthar | ~5,545 m | Often the highest point of a standard itinerary |
Nepal Tourism Board lists Kala Patthar at about 5,545 metres. It is a popular higher-altitude viewpoint known for panoramic views of Everest and the surrounding peaks.
This matters because someone planning a trek to Everest Base Camp may actually climb higher than Base Camp.
If Kala Patthar is part of your itinerary, your insurance needs to account for that higher altitude too.
What Altitude Should Everest Base Camp Insurance Cover?
Your insurance should cover at least the highest altitude you plan to reach. For a standard EBC trek that includes Kala Patthar, this means coverage beyond roughly 5,545 metres.
This is why searches for trekking insurance up to 6000m are closely related to Everest Base Camp.
A 6,000-metre trekking limit can provide room above the usual EBC and Kala Patthar elevations. However, altitude alone does not make a policy suitable.
You must still confirm that the policy covers:
your activity + your altitude + your medical needs + your evacuation needs.
For example, a policy covering travel up to 6,000 metres could still be unsuitable if high-altitude trekking is excluded.
The opposite can also happen. A policy may advertise trekking cover but set an altitude limit below your planned high point.
What if your itinerary includes more than EBC?
Check your route again if you plan to add:
- Kala Patthar
- Gokyo
- Cho La
- Renjo La
- Kongma La
- Island Peak
- Lobuche East
- another trekking peak or technical climb
Some of these activities may fall into a different insurance category.
Do not assume that insurance for the standard Everest Base Camp trek also covers climbing or special-route extensions.
What Should Everest Base Camp Insurance Cover?
There is no universal EBC insurance package.
Instead, check each important benefit separately.
1. High-Altitude Trekking
First, confirm that trekking is a covered activity.
Do not rely only on words such as “hiking,” “adventure” or “outdoor activities.”
Read the policy definition.
You should also check whether the insurer distinguishes between:
walking → hiking → trekking → high-altitude trekking → mountaineering → technical climbing
A standard Everest Base Camp trek is not the same activity as climbing Mount Everest.
2. Emergency Medical Treatment
Check what happens if you become sick or injured on the trail.
Look at:
- medical expense limits,
- hospital treatment,
- outpatient treatment,
- emergency treatment,
- deductibles,
- and payment procedures.
Medical treatment and evacuation are often separate benefits.
A high medical limit does not automatically mean helicopter rescue is covered.
3. Altitude Sickness
Check whether the policy addresses altitude-related illness.
The main terms to look for are:
AMS, HAPE and HACE.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most common form of altitude illness. HAPE and HACE are more serious conditions that can become life-threatening.
CDC guidance says trekkers with altitude illness should not continue to a higher elevation while symptoms persist. If symptoms become worse at the same elevation, descent is important.
Insurance coverage is a different question.
A policy may apply conditions related to:
- altitude,
- trekking activity,
- medical evidence,
- pre-existing conditions,
- evacuation,
- and authorization.
Never assume that “medical cover” automatically includes every altitude-related event.
4. Emergency Medical Evacuation
Medical evacuation means moving a traveller to appropriate medical care.
Depending on the location and medical need, this may involve:
- assisted descent,
- ground transport,
- ambulance,
- helicopter,
- or another suitable method.
The correct method depends on the situation.
5. Helicopter Evacuation
A helicopter can be important during some Himalayan emergencies, but it is not automatic.
A helicopter may be considered when the traveller needs urgent transport and flying is both medically appropriate and operationally possible.
Weather, visibility, terrain, altitude, landing conditions and aircraft availability can all affect a rescue. HGN's current helicopter rescue guidance also makes clear that helicopter evacuation is one option within a wider rescue process rather than a guaranteed response.
6. Search and Rescue
Search and rescue is not always the same as medical evacuation.
For example, locating or extracting a missing trekker may be treated differently from transporting an injured trekker to hospital.
Check how your policy defines each term.
7. Repatriation
Repatriation may apply after a serious medical event or death, depending on the policy.
Read the exact benefit wording and financial limit.
8. Trip Cancellation and Interruption
A suitable policy may also protect some prepaid trip costs if a covered event forces you to cancel before departure or end the trip early.
Covered reasons vary widely.
Do not assume every illness, weather problem or itinerary change qualifies.
9. Delays and Missed Connections
Flights serving Lukla are sensitive to mountain weather and operating conditions.
If flight disruption matters to you, check:
- minimum delay periods,
- domestic flight rules,
- missed connections,
- additional accommodation,
- and weather exclusions.
Leave enough time between your return from the mountains and your international flight even if you have delay insurance.
10. Baggage and Trekking Equipment
Check per-item limits if you are carrying expensive equipment.
Cameras, electronics, rented equipment and specialist trekking gear may have different conditions from ordinary luggage.
Does Travel Insurance Cover Helicopter Rescue in Nepal?
Some travel insurance policies cover medically necessary helicopter evacuation in Nepal, but it is never safe to assume. Coverage can depend on the trekking activity, altitude, medical need, financial limits, authorization rules and exclusions.
The words “emergency evacuation included” are not enough.
You need to know what “evacuation” means under that particular policy.
How Helicopter Evacuation Can Work
A genuine trekking emergency usually begins with someone reporting the traveller's location and condition.
The guide, trekking company, assistance provider, insurer, rescue coordinator or medical team may then become involved.
The situation is assessed before the transport method is chosen.
HGN's current rescue guidance describes a typical process in which the traveller's condition and location are checked, weather and terrain are assessed, and an appropriate response is selected. That response may be descent, ground evacuation, treatment in place or How Helicopter Rescue Works in Nepal.
Why a Helicopter Is Not Guaranteed
Even when helicopter transport is medically appropriate, flying may not be possible.
Possible limits include:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Weather | Cloud, fog, rain or storms can stop flights |
| Visibility | Pilots need safe operating conditions |
| Wind | Strong mountain winds can make flying unsafe |
| Altitude | Aircraft performance changes at high elevation |
| Terrain | A safe landing or pickup area may be needed |
| Daylight | Mountain rescue flights are generally daylight operations |
| Aircraft availability | Demand can be high during trekking season |
| Medical assessment | A helicopter may not be the right response |
| Authorization | The insurer or assistance provider may require approval |
Helicopter rescue is therefore a conditional emergency option, not a guaranteed transport service.
Before relying on a policy for an EBC trek, answer these questions:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the policy cover helicopter evacuation? | General evacuation wording may not be enough |
| What is the maximum trekking altitude? | EBC and Kala Patthar exceed 5,000 m |
| Must evacuation be medically necessary? | Most emergency transport has conditions |
| Is prior approval required? | Unapproved arrangements can create claim problems |
| Who should arrange the evacuation? | The process may involve an assistance provider |
| What is the financial limit? | Helicopter transport can be expensive |
| Does AMS qualify under relevant conditions? | Altitude illness rules vary |
| Is search and rescue separate? | It may have another definition or limit |
| Is direct billing available? | Payment procedures vary |
| What documents will be required? | Medical and rescue records may be important |
Save the emergency number before you begin the trek.
Finding it for the first time during an emergency is too late.
Does Travel Insurance Cover Altitude Sickness at EBC?
It can, but altitude sickness is not automatically covered by every travel insurance policy. Coverage depends on the policy's altitude limit, insured activity, medical benefits, evacuation rules and exclusions.
The three terms EBC trekkers should understand are:
AMS — Acute Mountain Sickness
The most common altitude illness.
HAPE — High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema
A serious condition affecting the lungs.
HACE — High-Altitude Cerebral Edema
A serious condition affecting the brain.
CDC guidance identifies AMS, HAPE and HACE as the main altitude-illness syndromes. HAPE and HACE require urgent medical attention and descent.
For insurance, check four separate things:
Is trekking covered?
Is your altitude covered?
Is altitude illness covered?
Is medically necessary evacuation covered?
A “yes” to one does not automatically mean “yes” to the others.
HGN has a separate guide explaining travel insurance and altitude sickness in Nepal, so this EBC article should link to that page for deeper AMS coverage information rather than duplicate the entire topic.
Standard Travel Insurance vs High-Altitude Trekking Insurance
The term “travel insurance” covers many different products.
A policy designed for a normal holiday may work very differently from one that specifically addresses trekking at high altitude.
| Feature | General travel insurance | High-altitude trekking cover |
|---|---|---|
| Normal tourism | Usually the main use | Usually included depending on terms |
| Hiking | May be included | Usually addressed |
| High-altitude trekking | May be limited | More likely to be defined |
| Altitude ceiling | Can apply | Higher limits may be available |
| Technical climbing | Often excluded | May still need specialist cover |
| Medical treatment | Common benefit | Usually subject to plan terms |
| Remote evacuation | Varies | Often more clearly addressed |
| Helicopter evacuation | Must be checked | May be specifically addressed |
| Search and rescue | Varies | May have a separate benefit |
| Adventure exclusions | Important | Still important |
Do not choose a policy based only on its category.
Choose it based on its wording.
EBC Trekking Insurance vs Mount Everest Climbing Insurance
Everest Base Camp trekking insurance and Mount Everest expedition insurance are not the same product.
The EBC trek reaches a little over 5,000 metres and follows a trekking route.
An Everest summit expedition reaches almost 8,849 metres and involves technical mountaineering, specialist equipment and a very different risk level.
| Factor | Everest Base Camp | Everest Expedition |
|---|---|---|
| Activity | High-altitude trekking | Extreme-altitude mountaineering |
| Main high point | ~5,364 m | ~8,849 m |
| Kala Patthar option | ~5,545 m | Not relevant to summit altitude |
| Technical climbing | Not normally required | Required |
| Specialist equipment | Trekking gear | Expedition climbing systems |
| Insurance type | Trekking/adventure cover | Specialist expedition cover |
| Rescue complexity | High | Much greater |
How Much Does Everest Base Camp Insurance Cost?
There is no single standard price for EBC travel insurance.
The cost can change based on:
age, country of residence, trip length, insured trip cost, maximum altitude, activity, medical limits, evacuation benefits, cancellation cover, health history and optional benefits.
For that reason, an unsupported “average EBC insurance price” is not very useful.
Instead, compare what you receive for the quoted price.
For example, Policy A may cost less but stop trekking cover at 4,500 metres.
Policy B may cost more but cover the full itinerary and provide suitable emergency transport.
In that case, price alone tells you very little.
When comparing quotes, use the same route and maximum altitude for each one.
How to Choose Insurance for Everest Base Camp
Step 1: Write Down Your Exact Route
Include your main trek, acclimatization hikes, viewpoints, passes and side trips.
Step 2: Find Your Highest Point
For many standard EBC itineraries, this is Kala Patthar rather than Base Camp.
Step 3: Confirm Trekking Is Covered
Find trekking or hiking in the actual policy wording.
Check how the policy defines the activity.
Step 4: Check the Altitude Limit
Look for a specific figure in metres or feet.
Your highest planned point must sit within the insured range.
Step 5: Check Altitude Illness
Search for AMS, altitude sickness, HAPE and HACE.
If the wording is unclear, ask the insurer.
Step 6: Review Medical Benefits
Check limits, deductibles and treatment rules.
Step 7: Check Emergency Transportation
Find out whether medical evacuation is included and how it works.
Step 8: Check Helicopter Terms
Confirm whether medically necessary helicopter evacuation can be covered.
Step 9: Understand Authorization
Know who must approve or arrange an evacuation.
Step 10: Read the Exclusions
A strong list of benefits means little if an exclusion applies to your route.
Step 11: Understand Claims
Check what medical reports, receipts or rescue documents you may need.
Step 12: Save Your Emergency Details Offline
Carry the policy number and emergency contact information during the trek.
How to Check Your Insurance Policy PDF
Do not rely only on a comparison website or a short product summary.
Download the full policy document.
Then use Ctrl + F on Windows or Command + F on Mac.
Search for these terms:
trekking, hiking, altitude, metres, feet, climbing, mountaineering, evacuation, helicopter, search and rescue, medical expenses, altitude sickness, AMS, adventure activities, hazardous activities, pre-existing conditions, repatriation, cancellation, authorization and exclusions.
Then answer five questions:
1. Is my activity covered?
2. Is my highest altitude covered?
3. Is the medical event covered?
4. Is emergency transport covered?
5. What procedure must I follow during an emergency?
Do not stop when you find the word “helicopter.”
Read the full section around it.
The nearby exclusions and conditions can completely change its meaning.
Common Everest Base Camp Insurance Exclusions
Exclusions differ between policies, but EBC trekkers should pay close attention to wording related to:
altitude limits, technical climbing, undeclared adventure activities, pre-existing medical conditions, alcohol or drugs, travelling against medical advice, unauthorized rescue arrangements, unattended belongings and policy-specific hazardous activities.
The key point is simple:
A benefit tells you what may be covered. An exclusion tells you when that benefit may not apply.
Read both.
Travel Insurance vs Emergency Rescue Coordination
This is one of the most important differences to understand before trekking in Nepal.
Insurance and rescue coordination are related, but they are not the same service.
Financial Protection
An insurance policy defines which eligible costs may be paid or reimbursed.
These may include medical treatment, emergency transportation, repatriation, cancellation or other insured benefits.
Emergency Coordination
Emergency coordination deals with what happens on the ground.
For example:
Emergency reported → traveller identified → location confirmed → condition assessed → assistance options reviewed → transport coordinated → medical care arranged → documents collected
This process can involve the trekker, guide, trekking agency, rescue coordinator, insurer, medical professionals, helicopter operator and hospital.
An insurance company may provide financial protection without having its own rescue team in Nepal.
Likewise, a rescue coordinator can organize practical assistance without guaranteeing that every resulting cost will be paid by an insurer.
The difference matters in the Himalayas, where communication, location and transport can be difficult.
How Himalayan Guardian Nepal's CTG Fits an EBC Trek
Himalayan Guardian Nepal's Comprehensive Tourism Guard (CTG) is designed for eligible travellers trekking in Nepal.
Instead of using one general altitude limit, CTG currently offers altitude-based categories at up to 2,000 m, 3,500 m, 5,500 m and 6,000 m, plus designated Special Routes.
That structure is relevant to EBC because the correct category depends on the highest point of the itinerary.
Who Provides Each Part?
HGN's current product information identifies:
| Role | Provider |
|---|---|
| CTG platform and service | Himalayan Guardian Nepal |
| Insurance provider | IGI Prudential Insurance Limited |
| Rescue partner | Alpine Rescue Service |
| Satellite safety device | Tracer M3, where selected/applicable |
HGN describes CTG as combining insurance with local emergency coordination, medical/rescue support and optional Tracer M3 satellite tracking.
What About AMS?
Current CTG information states that qualifying AMS-related benefits apply under relevant plans.
AMS medical treatment is specifically listed on the higher-altitude categories, while qualifying AMS can also trigger Emergency Medical Transportation subject to insurer requirements and policy terms.
Does CTG Include Helicopter Evacuation?
Emergency Medical Transportation under CTG may include helicopter evacuation when medically necessary and operationally appropriate.
It is not an automatic helicopter benefit.
The transport method depends on the traveller's medical condition, location, weather, terrain and other operational factors.
What About Tracer M3?
Tracer M3 is HGN's optional satellite GPS safety device for trekking.
It supports positioning and SOS communication where included or selected. HGN makes clear that the device supports emergency coordination; it does not by itself guarantee a rescue.
For an Everest Base Camp trek, travellers should compare the current CTG altitude category, benefits, eligibility, exclusions and duration against their actual itinerary and any insurance they already have.
CTG should not be described as automatically “the best Everest Base Camp insurance.”
The right question is whether its current terms fit the traveller's needs.
Do You Need CTG If You Already Have Travel Insurance?
Not always.
Start by checking the policy you already have.
If it covers your full EBC itinerary, high-altitude trekking, altitude sickness, suitable medical expenses and emergency evacuation, you may already have strong protection.
If important gaps remain, compare those gaps against a Nepal-specific option such as CTG.
| Question | Existing insurance | CTG |
|---|---|---|
| Is high-altitude trekking covered? | Check policy | Check applicable CTG plan |
| Is your maximum altitude covered? | Check limit | Match altitude category |
| Is AMS addressed? | Check policy | Qualifying benefits on applicable plans |
| Is emergency transport covered? | Check limit and rules | Included according to applicable plan |
| Can helicopter transport be considered? | Check exact wording | Possible where medically necessary and operationally appropriate |
| Is Nepal-based coordination available? | Varies | HGN coordinates locally |
| Is satellite tracking available? | Varies | Tracer M3 optional |
| Are benefits duplicated? | Compare | Compare before purchase |
Do not buy additional cover only because it is available.
Identify the gap first.
What to Do Before Your EBC Trek
Before leaving for the mountains, complete one final insurance check:
- Confirm that trekking is covered.
- Confirm the highest point of your itinerary.
- Check the altitude ceiling.
- Review AMS, HAPE and HACE wording.
- Check emergency medical treatment.
- Check medical evacuation.
- Verify helicopter evacuation conditions.
- Understand search-and-rescue terms.
- Read the exclusions.
- Check pre-existing-condition rules.
- Save the insurer's emergency number.
- Save your trekking agency or guide contact.
- Download your policy for offline access.
- Carry your policy number.
- Share your itinerary with someone you trust.
- Understand any authorization requirements.
- Know what evidence a claim may require.
- Recheck your insurance if your itinerary changes.
Mobile coverage can be limited in mountain areas.
Keep important documents available offline.
What Happens During an EBC Emergency?
Every incident is different, but a basic response may look like this:
Problem identified → guide/team informed → exact location established → medical assessment → emergency assistance contacted → transport options assessed → descent or evacuation arranged → treatment → documentation
Medical advice must come before insurance administration.
CDC guidance is clear that a person with altitude illness should not continue ascending while symptoms remain, and worsening symptoms can require descent.
During a serious emergency, follow qualified medical professionals, experienced guides and rescue personnel.
Everest Base Camp Insurance FAQs
What insurance do I need for Everest Base Camp?
Look for insurance that covers high-altitude trekking at your highest planned elevation. It should also provide suitable emergency medical treatment, altitude illness and evacuation benefits. Check helicopter rules, exclusions and emergency procedures.
What is the best travel insurance for Everest Base Camp?
There is no single best policy for everyone. The best option is the one that matches your route, maximum altitude, medical needs, evacuation requirements, trip length and personal circumstances.
Is travel insurance mandatory for Everest Base Camp?
Requirements can depend on current Nepal rules and your trekking operator. Even where a specific policy is not legally required, suitable high-altitude and rescue cover is strongly recommended.
Does normal travel insurance cover Everest Base Camp?
Sometimes, but not automatically. General travel policies can have activity exclusions or altitude limits. Check that both trekking and your highest planned elevation are covered.
What altitude should EBC insurance cover?
It should cover your highest planned point. Everest Base Camp is about 5,364 m, while Kala Patthar is about 5,545 m. If Kala Patthar is included, your policy should cover that higher elevation.
Do I need trekking insurance up to 6000m for Everest Base Camp?
A 6,000 m limit can suit many EBC itineraries because it sits above Base Camp and Kala Patthar. However, you still need to check the activity, medical, evacuation and exclusion terms.
Does travel insurance cover helicopter rescue in Nepal?
Some policies do, but coverage depends on medical necessity, altitude, activity rules, benefit limits, authorization and exclusions. Never assume helicopter rescue is included without checking the wording.
Is helicopter rescue guaranteed at Everest Base Camp?
No. Weather, visibility, altitude, terrain, landing conditions and aircraft availability can prevent or delay a helicopter flight.
Does insurance cover altitude sickness at Everest Base Camp?
It may. Check whether the policy covers your trekking altitude and whether AMS, HAPE and HACE fall within the relevant medical and evacuation benefits.
Does insurance cover Kala Patthar?
Only if the policy covers trekking at Kala Patthar's elevation and your activity meets all other policy conditions. Kala Patthar is approximately 5,545 m.
Does travel insurance cover Lukla flight delays?
Some policies cover eligible travel delays or missed connections. Check the minimum delay period, covered reasons, domestic-flight rules and financial limits.
How much does Everest Base Camp insurance cost?
There is no universal price. Age, residence, trip length, altitude, medical limits, cancellation benefits, activity level and optional cover can affect the premium.
Can I buy trekking insurance after arriving in Nepal?
This depends on the provider. HGN currently allows eligible travellers to purchase CTG after arriving in Nepal if their trek has not yet started. Coverage begins on the selected start date and is not retroactive.
What documents should I carry on the trek?
Keep your insurance certificate, policy number, policy wording and emergency contact details available offline. Also carry relevant identification and trekking documents.
What is the biggest mistake trekkers make with insurance?
One of the biggest mistakes is checking whether a policy says “trekking” but failing to check its altitude limit. Your policy needs to cover both the activity and the highest point of your route.
Final Advice: Check the Route, Not Just the Policy Name
Everest Base Camp insurance should not be complicated.
Start with four questions:
Does it cover trekking?
Does it cover my highest altitude?
Does it cover the medical risks I care about?
Does it provide suitable emergency evacuation?
Then check helicopter terms, exclusions, authorization and claims.
For many EBC itineraries, Kala Patthar makes the altitude question especially important because it rises higher than Everest Base Camp itself.
If you already have travel insurance, audit it before buying anything else.
If gaps remain, compare them with Nepal-specific trekking protection options such as Himalayan Guardian Nepal's Comprehensive Tourism Guard (CTG).
The goal is not to collect more policies.
It is to understand the protection you will actually have when you are on the trail.
