Conditions can change quickly. This article reflects information available at the stated update time and will be revised as the situation develops. It is not a substitute for your government's official travel advisory or a direct check with your trekking operator.
Quick answer
Two separate flood events are now affecting Nepal's autumn 2026 trekking season. The larger disaster struck the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on 26 August 2026, devastating communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun and Chitwan districts; as of the Nepal government's most recent update, well over 1,000 people have died and thousands remain missing, figures that are still being revised and should be checked directly against NDRRMA rather than any single article, including this one. Separately, a flood on 6 September 2026 in the Therang Khola/Budhi Gandaki at Namrung has washed out bridges on the Manaslu Circuit and Larke Pass, and Gorkha's District Administration Office has formally suspended trekking on that route until further notice. Neither event has translated into a nationwide closure. Nepal Tourism Board and Nepali tour operators have repeatedly stressed that the country is not closed to tourism, even as authorities urge travelers to avoid both affected corridors. The honest, trekker-specific answer is route-by-route, not country-wide: treat "is Nepal safe?" as the wrong question, and ask instead what the current condition of your trail, access road, and weather window actually is.
What happened in Nepal on 26 August 2026?
Early on the morning of 26 August 2026, a sudden, extremely powerful surge of water, ice, mud and boulders came down the Lhende Khola, a tributary that meets the Bhote Koshi River right at the Rasuwagadhi border crossing with China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Nepali and international water-monitoring data show the Trishuli River rose roughly 7–9 metres within about 30 minutes at downstream gauging stations, an extraordinarily fast and violent flood pulse. The surge destroyed the Gyirong/Rasuwagadhi border crossing and tore through a roughly 60–72 km stretch of the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli corridor, hitting Timure, Syabrubesi (the main Langtang trekking trailhead), Betrawati, Trishuli Bazar and communities further downstream in Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun and Chitwan.
On the physical trigger: Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have pointed to a probable glacier-related event most likely an ice avalanche or glacial-lake-related collapse near Langtang Lirung that entered the Lhende drainage as the initiating cause, with tremors from the event detected by seismometers as far away as international monitoring networks. Assessments of the precise chain of events are ongoing, and this preliminary explanation should be treated as the current scientific consensus rather than a final, confirmed finding. On the question of climate change, Nepal's Prime Minister has publicly stated there is "no doubt" it played a role; independent scientific attribution studies for this specific event were not available at the time of writing, so this article treats that as an official statement rather than a confirmed scientific attribution, and will update this section if and when formal attribution research is published.
Infrastructure damage has been severe: Nepal's Prime Minister has described damage to at least 48 suspension bridges (with roughly 28 requiring full replacement), along with destroyed roads, hydropower facilities, homes and markets along the corridor. This is why transport and trekking access not just the immediate disaster zone has been disrupted well beyond the riverbanks themselves.
Is Nepal closed to tourists after the floods?
No. No nationwide tourism closure has been announced by Nepali authorities, and none should be assumed. Nepal Tourism Board has been coordinating tourist welfare checks and information for travelers in and around the affected districts, while consistently communicating through its own channels and through statements from Nepali tour operators reported by international media that the country as a whole remains open. As Nepali tourism entrepreneur Rajendra Lama told the South China Morning Post, the country has a crisis in one part while remaining open and unaffected elsewhere.
Nepal's geography is the reason this is possible without contradiction. The country's major trekking regions sit in separate river valleys, drained by different watersheds, that rarely interact physically: the Everest/Khumbu region drains through the Dudh Koshi in the east; the Annapurna region centers on the Kali Gandaki, Marsyangdi and Modi Khola in the west-central hills; Manaslu is reached from Gorkha district via Arughat on the Budhi Gandaki; Kanchenjunga and Makalu sit in the far east; Upper Mustang and Dolpo sit in the northern rain-shadow. A catastrophic flood on the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli system does not, by itself, tell you anything about conditions on any of those other watersheds.
At the same time, "Nepal is open" does not mean every road and every trail is currently usable. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has been explicit on this point in its Nepal travel advice: it has not advised against all travel to Nepal, but it does warn that flooding and landslides can leave roads impassable and communities cut off for days, and it advises travelers to verify road access and stay ready to adjust plans on short notice. Treat any specific route as unconfirmed until you or your operator has current information on it.
Nepal trekking route status - September 2026
The table below distinguishes trekking-region status from the specific access road/corridor status. Do not treat any entry as a permanent or guaranteed status, verify again close to your departure date. Where multiple credible sources disagreed on details, that disagreement is noted rather than resolved by guesswork.
| Region / route | Current status | August 26 flood impact | Access considerations | What trekkers should do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rasuwagadhi–Timure (border corridor) | Travel advisory applies / avoid | Direct - border crossing destroyed, corridor devastated | Road and bridges seriously damaged; active search-and-recovery operations | damaged; active search-and-recovery operations Do not enter; this is not a trekking route |
| Langtang Valley & Gosainkunda (via Syabrubesi/Dhunche) | Access significantly disrupted / verify locally | Direct - main trailhead town (Syabrubesi) and approach road damaged | Reports disagree on whether the upper Langtang trail itself was directly hit; the standard road approach through Dhunche–Syabrubesi is the confirmed problem | Do not book or attempt independently; get direct, dated confirmation from a TAAN-registered operator before travel |
| Tamang Heritage Trail | Access significantly disrupted / verify locally | Shares the same Rasuwa access corridor as Langtang | Same road-access constraints as above | Treat as unavailable until operator confirms otherwise |
| Everest Base Camp / Gokyo / Everest Three Passes | No direct impact from August 26 event reported | None reported | Separate watershed (Dudh Koshi); Lukla flights reported operating on normal schedule | Confirm your specific departure with your operator as a matter of routine, not because of this flood |
| Annapurna Base Camp / Annapurna Circuit / Mardi Himal / Poon Hill | No direct impact from August 26 event reported | None reported | Separate watershed (Kali Gandaki/Marsyangdi/Modi Khola) | Confirm current trail and road conditions as you normally would for monsoon-transition season |
| Manaslu Circuit & Larke Pass | Avoid / official trek prohibition in effect | a separate flood on 6 September 2026 at Namrung (Therang Khola/Budhi Gandaki) washed away the Budhi Gandaki suspension bridge and a second bridge, cutting the trail | Office, Gorkha, has formally suspended trekking on this route until further notice; Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) has issued a matching advisory; trekkers already on route have been stranded by the missing bridge | Do not depart on this route; if already en route, follow local authority and MCAP instructions and stay in a safe location |
| Tsum Valley | Avoid / verify locally | Shares the lower Manaslu approach affected by the 6 September Namrung flood | Access likely constrained by the same bridge loss, since Tsum Valley uses the same lower trail before branching off | Confirm current access with a licensed operator or MCAP before departure |
| Upper Mustang | No direct impact from August 26 event reported | None reported | Separate watershed and region (Kali Gandaki upper valley); standard restricted-area permit rules apply | Confirm permit and flight/road access as normal |
| Kanchenjunga Base Camp / Circuit | No direct impact from August 26 event reported | None reported | Far-eastern Nepal, separate watershed | Confirm as normal |
| Makalu Base Camp | No direct impact from August 26 event reported | None reported | Eastern Nepal, separate watershed | Confirm as normal |
| Dolpo | No direct impact from August 26 event reported | None reported | Remote far-west/mid-west region, separate watershed | Confirm as normal, noting Dolpo's usual remoteness and flight dependency regardless of this event |
Two distinct flood events are reflected in this table: the 26 August 2026 Bhote Koshi–Trishuli flood (affecting Rasuwa/Langtang/Tamang Heritage) and the 6 September 2026 Therang Khola/Budhi Gandaki flood at Namrung (affecting Manaslu Circuit, Larke Pass and Tsum Valley). They are unrelated incidents in different watersheds, do not assume one caused the other, and do not assume a region cleared of the first event is automatically clear of the second.
Kathmandu and Pokhara: current status not directly comparable to a trekking "route," but worth stating plainly because headlines rarely draw the map, both cities sit outside the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli flood corridor, and flights, hotels and city operations have been widely reported as continuing on a normal basis. Chitwan district registered a significant share of downstream casualties along the Narayani/Trishuli river system; this is a district-level statistic and should not be read as meaning the Sauraha tourist area itself (on the separate Rapti River) was directly struck but if your itinerary includes any riverside activity in Chitwan, confirm current advice with your operator rather than assuming either way.
Langtang & Rasuwa: why this region needs special attentionRasuwa is where this disaster is concentrated, and it deserves its own section because search interest here is high and the situation is still moving. Syabrubesi, the trailhead town for essentially every Langtang, Gosainkunda and Tamang Heritage itinerary was among the settlements directly hit. The approach road from Trishuli Bazar through Betrawati and Dhunche to Syabrubesi, and onward to Timure and the Rasuwagadhi border, has sustained serious, in places extensive, damage to both the roadbed and to bridges along the corridor. The Rasuwagadhi border crossing into Tibet has been destroyed, which also means the overland route to Kyirong and onward to Mount Kailash, popular with pilgrims as well as trekkers is currently suspended.
What is genuinely uncertain, and should be reported as uncertain: whether the upper Langtang Khola trail above Syabrubesi (Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, Kyanjin Gompa) sustained direct physical damage, as opposed to simply being unreachable because the access road is out. Different operator sources give different answers to this, which is exactly the kind of claim this article's sourcing rules require flagging rather than resolving by assumption. Some operators have floated a possible reopening timeframe in late September 2026 for the access road; that is a private operational estimate, not a government confirmation, and should be treated accordingly.
Do not attempt to reach Langtang, Gosainkunda, or the Tamang Heritage Trail independently or via an unofficial alternative route. If you have a booking in this region, see the dedicated section below on what to do next.
What about Everest Base Camp?
Short answer: the classic Everest Base Camp route, Gokyo, and the Everest Three Passes trek have not been reported as directly affected by the 26 August flood by any of the government, tier-2 media, or TAAN-affiliated operator sources reviewed for this update. The reasoning is geographic, not just reassurance: the Khumbu region is drained by the Dudh Koshi river system in eastern Nepal, physically separate from the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli system where the flood occurred. Lukla flights have been widely reported as operating on their normal schedule through late August and early September.
That is not the same as saying the trek is risk-free. September is still Nepal's monsoon transition month (see the section below), and EBC carries its own standing risks unrelated to this flood: altitude illness, weather-driven flight delays into and out of Lukla, and the general unpredictability of high-mountain trekking. "Not directly affected by this flood" and "no risk" are two different statements, treat them as two different statements.
What about Annapurna?
Annapurna Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, Mardi Himal and the Ghorepani/Poon Hill route have likewise not been reported as directly affected by the 26 August flood. The Annapurna region's rivers the Kali Gandaki, Marsyangdi and Modi Khola are a separate watershed from the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli system. Flights to Pokhara and Jomsom have been reported operating on a normal basis.
As with Everest, verify current bridge, trail and road conditions independently of this flood event, since seasonal monsoon-transition landslides and stream crossings are a normal late-monsoon consideration on Annapurna-region trails regardless of the Rasuwa disaster.
Manaslu, Mustang and other regions
Manaslu's status changed on 6 September 2026 and is now a formal closure, not a caution note. In the days immediately after the 26 August Rasuwa flood, Manaslu was correctly reported as unaffected: the Manaslu Circuit is accessed via Gorkha district and the town of Arughat, following the Budhi Gandaki, a separate route and separate river system from the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli corridor. That remains true of the original flood. But on the morning of 6 September 2026, a distinct and unrelated flash flood struck the Therang Khola and Budhi Gandaki at Namrung, in Chumnubri Rural Municipality-4, washing away the main suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki and a second iron bridge, along with two micro-hydropower plants. The District Administration Office, Gorkha, responded the same day with a formal public notice suspending trekking on the Manaslu Circuit and Larke Pass until further notice, and the Manaslu Conservation Area Project, the body that issues Manaslu's restricted-area permits issued a matching advisory. Local officials reported no casualties from this specific event, but hundreds of trekkers already on the route, including those heading for Larke Pass, were left stranded by the missing bridge, and communications and electricity in the area were disrupted by the loss of the hydropower plants.
Because the lower Manaslu trail is shared with the Tsum Valley route before the two paths diverge, Tsum Valley access is also constrained by this bridge loss and should be treated as unavailable pending confirmation, even though Tsum itself was not named directly in the district notice. Do not treat this as the same event as the 26 August Rasuwa/Langtang flood, it is a separate incident, in a different watershed, roughly two weeks later, and it should be checked and reported on its own terms. Given how recent this closure is, treat any "Manaslu is fine" claim you see elsewhere including in earlier versions of this article, or in other operator content dated before 6 September as outdated until you get a fresh, dated confirmation.
Upper Mustang, Nar Phu, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Dolpo have not been reported as directly affected by either flood event and sit in entirely separate geographic regions from both corridors. Standard restricted-area permit rules continue to apply to Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Nar Phu, Tsum Valley and Dolpo, and per a regulatory change effective March 2026, solo trekkers may obtain restricted-area permits provided they travel with a licensed guide from a registered agency; independent trekking without any guide remains not permitted in Nepal's major conservation areas and national parks, a rule that has been in place since April 2023.
September is still monsoon: the flood is not the only risk
It is easy to fold every Nepal safety question into "the flood" right now, but Nepal's monsoon season typically runs into September, and even trekking regions with zero connection to the 26 August event can experience their own, unrelated rainfall, landslides, swollen streams, rockfall, transport delays and domestic flight disruption during this transition period. This is a normal seasonal pattern in the Himalaya, not a sign that the disaster has "spread." The UK FCDO's general Nepal guidance makes the same point about the wider monsoon window, independent of the Rasuwa event: heavy monsoon rain between June and September can trigger flash floods and landslides that block roads, damage property, and slow emergency response.
Practically, this means: build flexibility into your itinerary regardless of which region you're trekking in, expect that a delayed flight or a rerouted day is a normal possibility in September, and check Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and your operator's live updates rather than relying on a generic seasonal average.
Why this event highlights the importance of trekking insurance
None of the above should be read as "insurance makes a dangerous route safe" it doesn't. Insurance is one part of a preparedness plan, not a substitute for choosing not to walk into a restricted or damaged area. What this disaster does highlight is how much variation exists between policies, and how easy it is to discover a coverage gap only in an emergency.
Before buying a trekking-specific policy for Nepal, check:
- Maximum altitude covered, and whether the highest point on your specific itinerary (e.g., Thorong La at 5,416 m, Everest Base Camp at ~5,364 m, Kalapatthar higher still) falls within that limit
- Emergency medical treatment coverage levels
- Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) coverage, and HAPE/HACE coverage where applicable
- Emergency medical evacuation, including both helicopter evacuation terms and ground evacuation where a helicopter isn't operationally possible
- Repatriation provisions
- Rescue authorization procedures who has to approve a rescue, and how
- Policy exclusions, in full
- Natural-disaster clauses specifically many general travel policies do not automatically cover flood-related trip cancellation, road closures, or trip interruption; some do, with conditions; this varies by insurer and by policy tier, so read the actual wording rather than assuming
- Trip cancellation/interruption provisions, and how they interact with a government "avoid" advisory versus a personal decision to postpone
- Weather-related exclusions
- Whether trekking is classified as an "adventure activity" requiring a specific rider or add-on
Nepal Tourism Board's general guidance to travelers is to make sure insurance covers the activities actually being undertaken; UK and Australian government travel guidance similarly stress the importance of appropriate mountain rescue, medical evacuation and altitude coverage for high-altitude trekking specifically, rather than assuming a standard travel policy automatically extends to it. Do not assume any specific policy covers flood-related cancellation, accommodation loss, road closure, or missed connections related to this event, check your policy's actual wording.
For travelers looking specifically at Nepal-focused trekking protection
Himalayan Guardian Nepal offers Comprehensive Tourism Guard (CTG), a Nepal-focused trekking protection product with altitude-based plans. If you're comparing options, the practical starting point is the same one outlined above: identify the highest altitude on your actual itinerary, and select a plan that covers it, rather than the reverse. CTG plans are designed to be available to eligible travelers before their covered trek or journey begins, and are built around qualifying emergency medical transportation, altitude-related (AMS) protection depending on the specific plan and terms, and access to HGN's emergency coordination ecosystem. Where a rescue partner is involved, HGN works with Alpine Rescue Service; evacuation, where used, means helicopter or ground evacuation when medically necessary and operationally appropriate not a guarantee that a helicopter will be available in every circumstance, since weather, terrain and aviation conditions can all affect whether any evacuation method is possible at a given moment.
Before you trek: September 2026 safety checklist
- Route status: confirmed with your operator within the last few days, not from a listing made before 26 August
- Access road: specifically asked about, not assumed from the trekking region's general reputation
- Weather forecast: checked via Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology or your operator's current briefing
- Permits: TIMS card and area-specific permits (including restricted-area permits where applicable) confirmed and current
- Licensed guide: booked through a TAAN-registered agency; independent/unguided trekking is not permitted in Nepal's major conservation areas and national parks
- Emergency contacts: Nepal Tourist Police (1144), your embassy's emergency line, your trekking agency's 24-hour contact, and Nepal's general emergency hotline (1234)
- Insurance altitude limits: matched against your itinerary's actual highest point, in writing from the insurer
- AMS planning: acclimatization days built into the itinerary, not skipped for schedule reasons
- Evacuation procedure: you know who authorizes a rescue and how to reach them
- Itinerary flexibility: a buffer day or two built in for weather/road delays, which are normal in September regardless of this flood
- Family/location communication: someone at home knows your route and has a way to reach your operator directly
What should I do if my Langtang or Rasuwa trek is already booked?
- Contact your trekking operator directly, do not rely on general news coverage to make this decision for you
- Check the official Nepal Tourism Board and your own government's travel advisory, and for Manaslu specifically the District Administration Office, Gorkha, and Manaslu Conservation Area Project notices
- Ask for current, dated verification of road and trail access, not a general reassurance
- Discuss postponement or an alternative region/itinerary with your operator; Everest, Annapurna and other unaffected regions are realistic substitutes for this season
- Contact your insurer before changing or cancelling anything, so you understand how the change affects any claim
- Do not attempt to enter Rasuwa, the Langtang corridor, the Manaslu Circuit/Larke Pass, or any area under active restriction independently, search-and-recovery operations are still active in parts of Rasuwa, and Manaslu's bridge crossings are currently gone; this is both a safety issue and a matter of respect for the response effort
- If you are already on the Manaslu trail when this closure takes effect, follow District Administration Office and MCAP instructions and remain in a safe location rather than attempting to cross damaged crossings
- Do not assume an unofficial alternative route is a safe substitute unless it has been specifically verified by authorities or your registered operator
FAQ / People Also Ask
Is Nepal safe to travel in September 2026? Most of Nepal's trekking regions including Everest, Annapurna, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Upper Mustang have not been reported as directly affected by either the 26 August or the 6 September flood events and continue to receive visitors. Rasuwa/Langtang/Gosainkunda and, as of 6 September, the Manaslu Circuit and Larke Pass are exceptions and require direct, current verification before travel.
Is Nepal closed after the floods? No. No nationwide closure has been announced. Nepal Tourism Board and Nepali tour operators have both stressed that the country remains open outside the directly affected corridors, while local authorities have formally restricted travel in Rasuwa and, separately, on the Manaslu Circuit/Larke Pass.
Which parts of Nepal were affected by the August 2026 flood? The 26 August flood struck the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridor, primarily affecting Rasuwa district, with downstream impact reported in Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun and Chitwan districts. A separate, unrelated flood on 6 September 2026 struck the Therang Khola/Budhi Gandaki at Namrung in Gorkha district, affecting the Manaslu Circuit and Larke Pass.
Is Langtang open after the Rasuwa flood? The Langtang and Gosainkunda access corridor (via Dhunche and Syabrubesi) is significantly disrupted, with damaged roads and bridges. Whether the upper Langtang trail itself sustained direct damage is reported inconsistently across sources; treat this route as unavailable until your operator gives current, dated confirmation.
Is the Manaslu Circuit open after the floods? No. As of 6 September 2026, the District Administration Office, Gorkha, has formally suspended trekking on the Manaslu Circuit and Larke Pass until further notice, after a flash flood at Namrung washed away the main Budhi Gandaki suspension bridge and a second bridge. This is unrelated to the 26 August Rasuwa flood. Do not depart on this route until the district administration or Manaslu Conservation Area Project lifts the restriction.
Is Everest Base Camp affected by the Nepal floods? No direct impact has been reported. The Khumbu/Everest region is drained by the Dudh Koshi River, a separate watershed from the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli system where the flood occurred, and Lukla flights have been reported operating normally.
Is Annapurna Base Camp affected? No direct impact has been reported. The Annapurna region's rivers (Kali Gandaki, Marsyangdi, Modi Khola) are a separate watershed from the flood-affected corridor.
Should I cancel my Nepal trek? Only if your specific route runs through the affected Rasuwa/Langtang corridor or the Manaslu Circuit/Larke Pass, or your operator advises it. For treks in unaffected regions, cancellation is a personal risk-tolerance decision rather than one driven by current route status.
Do I need travel insurance for trekking in Nepal? Yes, comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers trekking as an activity, at your itinerary's actual maximum altitude, including emergency medical treatment and evacuation, is strongly recommended for any Nepal trek regardless of this event.
Does trekking insurance cover helicopter rescue in Nepal? It depends entirely on the specific policy. Some policies include helicopter evacuation when medically necessary and operationally possible; others exclude or cap it. Confirm this in writing with your insurer before departure, never assume.
Does travel insurance cover natural disasters or floods? Not automatically. Coverage for flood-related trip cancellation, road closures, or interruption varies significantly by insurer and policy tier. Read your policy's specific natural-disaster and cancellation clauses rather than assuming coverage.
Is September a safe month for trekking in Nepal? September sits at the tail end of Nepal's monsoon season. Rainfall, landslides and transport delays are a normal seasonal risk in September independent of the 26 August flood, and itineraries should build in flexibility accordingly.
Where can I check official Nepal trekking updates? Nepal Tourism Board, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, NDRRMA, your own government's travel advisory (e.g., UK FCDO, US State Department), and your TAAN-registered trekking operator are the most reliable sources.
